Knowing that Squall has some vague but important role in saving the universe somewhere down the line is reason to *not* send him off on crazy missions though. Cid really doesn't have any way of knowing that this is the moment Edea will start doing stuff (and probably not that she's important to Squall's future shenanigans) unless it's directly spelled out somewhere, and he definitely couldn't anticipate how events would lead to Squall having to go fight Edea right away.
