movies have been down this year but hollywood only has itself to blame. i'm sure there's some great foreign 2011 movies but I won't see those until next year when they hit the festival market.

this year saw the release of SMiLE. ignoring the ridiculous depth and variety in music from 2011, that's the best release since Untrue. this may have been a down year in hip-hop compared to the last two years (it's easy to create a solid top 5 that compares but after that there's a bit of a drop), and there's only been a handful of good rock albums, but everything else this year has been excellent.

if the king of limbs is the best thing you've heard this year, you should probably listen to more music.

An album from 1966 cant be the best album of 2011.

Hip-hop kinda sucked this year, but that's mostly because nothing major was really released-- which bodes well for 2012 (Andre 3k may have the GOAT next year).

Rock, as you said, was nothing special either.

And to be honest I am getting sick of this indie electronic dance **** that Pitchfork and iconsience have been really latching onto these past few years. Some of it is phenomenal, but Christ there's too much of it and it can't sate my musical needs for an entire year. Same with folk.
