because she was very ambiguous prior to that, when they finally chose to define her more, they went in a very unlikeable direction with her. even if they go back to minimalist metroid, that's there forever, unless they make it non-canon.
I also don't see the relation for best game = best character. I love super metroid and metroid prime but I never would have had samus as one of my top 10 characters even before other m. some games do thrive on the strength of their characters like metal gear solid, but not all great games have great characters
Maybe this is going to anger you, but Samus's personality in Other M matched up surprisingly accurately with who I imagined beforehand. Though I agree that her portrayal could use some serious improvements.
To be fair though, I've only been a fan of the series for 3 years, and went into Other M with a Mario mindset. Also I had played through Super Metroid for the 2nd time just a few weeks beforehand, and especially ironic was that the highlight of the playthrough (in fact, highlight of the entire year for me) was me defeating Ridley in one try when he had given me lots of trouble the previous time. It was an epic battle where I won when I was on my last energy tank: obviously my Samus is going to get into a PTSD when she sees someone who she thought was dead for good, killed her parents, and came close to relieving her of her own life on the prior encounter, among other things such as prompting the main events of Super Metroid in the first place.
It's a matter of Samus being more exciting in Super Metroid and Prime than Link is anywhere aside from MAYBE A Link to the Past. And I changed my mind on the whole "Wind Waker is a 10/10 thing".
