Going for what's statistically popular has always been a long-term bad idea. This isn't me talking about dating, this is marketing and business speaking. Following trends is safe, and more reliable, while innovating, and looking for new solutions is risky, but more rewarding if it yields success.

Exploiting market inefficiencies is the best way to make a profit. In an ideal free market, it should be impossible to stay profitable in the long term because everybody else will go into the same business.

Alphas utilize a market inefficiency. Long term, if everybody acted like that, then there would be no profit from acting like that.

At least that would be the Alpha theory.
