Nintendo usually plans for each gen by taking anything more popular than it and locks onto the worst thing that system did.
N64: Relied on cartridges and had space for add-ons, like the Genesis
Gamecube: Memory cards with stupidly low capacity, like the PS1
Wii: Doesn't put much into graphical power, like the PS2
