Maybe six years ago when it was still basically an internet term, the strict definition fit better.
I think it needs the strict definition because it is getting so mainstream.
Without a strict, unique definition, people will just use it as a generic synonym, and then you literally lose a word out of the vocabulary (like what happened with epic).
And then if you use its stricter definition it might be confusing to people who only know it as a synonym of "being annoying" or something and you have to spend time explaining the difference, etc.
