I'm actually coming to terms with this - I don't really mind the loss of the same archaic battle system they've used for 25 years, but the idea of uncontrollable AI characters or forced multiplayer really unsettles me. I think there's a space for DQ as a single player game that's more action-y, but to go all the way to full-blown MMO is a little drastic.
and yeah, I know this isn't full-blown in the same way that a FF11 or WOW is. it's just more than I would like. I would put money on it that the sense of adventure and extremely detailed world will translate extremely well to this kind of game -- maybe even better than any previous game in the series. I just don't really want it to go there.
