A at night.
B during the day.

This.

You get all the advantages of B but you're also protected from a thief sneaking in at night.

Also when you lock something, you give the impression that there's something valuable inside. If someone breaks into your house, and sees a locked briefcase, and right next to it, an open briefcase with 100 dollar bills in the pockets, guess which one he's going to take?

I'm trying to parse this comment. Obviously the thief takes the visible money. (He may take both of course, but if he can only take one...) You seem to be implying otherwise though?

Regardless, it's quite well-documented that most thieves (real ones, not the ones on TV who do it for a challenge) far prefer to take things which are behind less security because it's easier and there's less chance of detection.
