That's an unfair comparison because the first PotC movie wasn't Will Turner and Captain Bland Sparrow.
Well, there's a reason the first AC is less popular than the ones that followed!
Regardless, the point is that "importance" storywise doesn't automatically mean "importance" to the player/viewer/whoever. Desmond Miles isn't that important to the average AC fan, I would wager.
