The idea is 100% appealing to me. I love Shepard, but I'm confident the writers responsible for these characters can write another cast just as endearing.

Whatever allows them to open the game up to a wider gameplay scale. I'm not sure they really want to, but sequel or prequel doesn't matter to me! I prefer them not to revisit any of the existing characters, though.
I don't believe those Mass Shift rumors necessarily, but the people who came up with them aren't total dullstones. Something like an aged Liara will probably make it into any somewhat-distant sequel, really, as a tie-in. IMO, of course. Could be way off.
