Turn-based battle systems weren't a limitation of the PS2, but many popular RPGs had them. Lost Odyssey is the most successful new JRPG on a console this gen, and it featured turn-based battles where characters stood in two rows. There's nothing weird about it. I don't think many would agree that an action battle system is the modern answer for JRPGs. People fondly remember FFX and FFIX. You can bring modern ideas to old mechanics.
