Well, that's definitely the case for FFXII, but its areas are much bigger than most FF areas, so that ends up taking a lot of the time. I don't really think FFXIII's issue is length.
The chapter system really drove home for me how much longer its storyline needed to be for me to care about it, regardless of how long its storyline 'technically' was in comparison to the PSX FFs -- which traditionally have always taken me longer file-wise than my one and only FFXIII file ever got near.
I think it's just a very subjective thing, but I'm more than willing to admit that from the most objective viewpoints possible, FFXIII might technically be the longer game. But damn, does it feel like nothing happens to me, which makes it feel short.
