Well, I would suggest that England's record is due entirely to their fragile emotional state. They're a team who is known for choking. I consider your reaction to the team in general to be fairly representative of your country as a whole. When your entire nation expects you to choke, it shouldn't be that surprising when you do.
When the Italian player missed a PK, I'm guessing everyone on the team was like "oh well, we'll get one back and we still have a chance in this team," but when the English player hit one off the post, I'm assuming the entire nation (including the players and coaches on the team) said "OH NO HERE WE GO AGAIN GODDAMMIT WHY DO WE SUCK SO BAD"
