The name was a mistake. That's twice in a row that Nintendo has bungled system names. I understand that they wanted to take advantage of the huge DS/Wii brand name power, but they should have made it more clear that 3DS and Wii U were entirely new machines.
this so hard. I've heard soccer moms ask GameStop employees if the 3DS games could be played on the DS in 2D several times. They just think it is the same system with 3D capabilities. They also don't see the benefit of giving their kid a 3DS because it is "the same thing but it pops more" or whatever.
I also know several gamers that thought the Wii U was just a tablet controller for the Wii.
