First time I finished Return of Samus and Fusion as well.

Super > Metroid > Fusion > Zero Mission > Return of Samus

- Metroid fell from it's top spot due to a more intimate session with it's technical flaws and questionable design choices.
Nonlinearity and exploration is still unparalleled. If the game could just have a few things fixed it would be the best.
- Super is still as awesome as ever.
- Fusion is the real star here. I used to bash it as extremely linear and boring, sharing the bottom of the barrel with Corruption and Other M. Turns out it had a good amount of exploration in between segments, and the game really opens up at the end. Probably most of all, I really appreciated the bosses. Best of the 2D hands down.
- Zero Mission fell pretty hard when I realized it was actually almost as linear as Fusion in the end, but without as many navigation rooms. Also felt pretty small in comparison to Fusion and, obviously, had less "freshness" to it.
- Metroid II, pretty linear in the end, and I really hate how close-up Samus is on the screen. Made exploring and fighting annoying. Still pretty cool all the same.

Probably gonna do 3D Metroid next.
