Applied math isn't useless, but it probably wouldn't be as useful as a Mech E degree if that's the thing you want to do (I imagine it could be more useful in a finance-like area, especially if it was focused in statistics-like classes instead of a bunch of calc stuff). I wouldn't give up on it though; it's possible that you could get hired with the AM degree if you can convince them that you know the material taught in the relevant classes, though that may require taking a few more Mech E classes anyway.
