Aeris is a damn good character. She's this chick who has a steady stream of idiot men falling for her (Zack, Cloud and Tseng), but her only real thing was for Zack, who she actually got attached to somewhere between playing with him and the point where he ran off and died. Which made her go a little crazy ("Hey Tseng, if you see Zack, give him these *one hundred letters* I wrote him, okay?"), and then a year or so later, Cloud falls into her church in the exact fashion she met Zack, thinking he *is* Zack, except not really. So then you get the events of FF7, where she's playing along with nutso Cloud to a degree, but really just refusing to let go of her dead boyfriend. Until she finally does tell Cloud that she hopes he finds himself some day and runs off to spoiler spoiler
This is *way* the hell more depth than you get out of most JRPG characters
