My biggest hang up on XIII is that I never finished XII for exactly the problem you were describing, I realized that the story was completely boring.
Why the heck did they make a XIII-2 before a VI-2 or a VII-2? >_>
XIII's story is not boring in any way. It's just bad. Subtle, but important, distinction.
On the actual topic, I'm not sure what I can add. Um...
Demon's Souls and its "sequel", Dark Souls, have already been mentioned. Those are two of my favorite games.
Oh, Catherine is pretty awesome if you are into awesome music, style, a mature plot, and addicting puzzle-based block pushing action!
Also there's a bunch of HD collections of PS2 games and some gems on PSN like God Hand and three of the PS2 SMT games IIRC.
