I should probably state how I feel about this in more detail, after reading Chris's comment.
I used to pirate movies and music pretty regularly, but after I came home from Ghana after two years I decided it probably wasn't the best thing to do. I only pirate for good now, meaning that I pirate material that I would not pay money for otherwise and is being used for a productive purpose. Coincidentally I am currently downloading some lectures on Forex trading which I am going to watch to try to help me learn how to day-trade. If I were to not have this available I would go to the library and check out some books about it instead, so this just saves me time and costs the producer nothing. On occasions where I find I would in fact have purchased the material. I delete the files and I proceed to purchase it. You could argue about the ethics of my actions, but I think that they are perfectly reasonable in both a utilitarian and Kantian sense.
So I think there is merit in the pirate bay. I think if everyone were to pirate like I do then the world would be better off, but I know that isn't what people do.
Hence why I am kind of Meh, about this.
