It's worth pointing out that playing these games at night, with head phones, ups the scare factor significantly.

I completely agree, the problem is though that I always play games at evening/night and never during day since I'm doing other stuff then. So in some way playing a game at night doesn't increase the scariness for me anymore, but it surely doesn't prevent the scariness like during day.

Also Haunting Ground, which is more or less Clock Tower 4 (that's what it was going to be, before it was made its own game)

Noted, looks interesting too.

...and I'm not sure what you mean about hiding in Amnesia, since doing that with a monster nearby would just drain your sanity and kill you that way. And they could follow you from room to room

Maybe I worded it wrong. If you hide in a shadow without light without the monster seeing you will make the monster pass you. Sure, being in the shadow drains your sanity, but if done right it does work.

And with going to another room I mean passing an area load point so that you get a loading screen. The monsters don't follow you through those area's.

And I doubt the "losing sanity kills you" talk, I hear a few people talking about it, and I never had that happen, I frequently got to the point that my sanity was as good as empty, so I was all dizzy and was difficult to walk through the game, but I still lived.

Never argue with idiots. They will drag you to their level and beat you with experience.
