Callouses do not make you play guitar better. They just make it more tolerable to do so. Take it from someone who doesn't go through monthly "callous-forming" due to not playing for so long -.-
They do, though. The tougher fingers make your fretting easier to do - less force and pressure required for it. They don't automatically make you good or anything, but they do have an impact on your playing!
