Punisher: War Zone

Rating: 34/100

It did my heart good to see that a take on Punisher more in line with the Ennis MAX series was panned critically. Stevenson nailed the character as a bland protagonist with nothing interesting going for him. Over the years, I have soured so hard on the entire tone and morality depicted in Punisher. Punisher is an example of all the ill in America wrapped up and glorified for our entertainment. Fuck Frank Castle. Fuck the Punisher.

I don't even want to talk about all of that nor consider those movies as part and parcel with the individual's negative actions. I can appreciate a Chris Benoit match without appreciating Chris Benoit.

Define "hurt", because I think everyone is assuming this is a physical abuse stand-in. Like, if this is just about teamkilling in Call of Duty, more power to you.

The Emperor's New Groove

Rating: 62/100

An interesting way to present a classic story, but the world feels so empty and the main character is very unlikable for too long. I don't generally have a problem with unlikable characters except in animation, where the bar for a narrative is so often built on a character's inherent charisma. Decent villain work, but a meandering plot as well.

Black Panther

Rating: 85/100

I thought it had a more unique voice than almost all Marvel films, but I wasn't as visually impressed as I was with Doctor Strange and I don't think Black Panther is as sustainable as a franchise as others since the characters that would work well in conjunction with Panther are unavailable to him.

And, for the love of god, STOP KILLING VILLAINS. So many of these characters deserve returns - first films in a franchise don't suffer from this, but subsequent films absolutely do: a hero remains static without dynamic villains. So after walking away from this film, you can see clearly that wherever the next film goes, it won't be as compelling since Panther is now a toy, not a character.

World War Z

Rating: 62/100

Brad Pitt was a good choice for the narrator character of the book, and I didn't have a problem with upping the speed of the zombies. In fact, it's more realistic to believe fast zombies can propel a worldwide pandemic. I wish they had chosen to make World War Z an anthology series with a single narrator that helped provide a through-thread on the show. Zombies have moaned and groaned their way into an enduring sub-genre, and I think there's enough play to have an almost Twilight Zone-style series, all built in the same universe.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Rating: 75/100

Visually impressive and full of creativity, but I find that the narrative is reminiscent of an Old West movie set; on the outside it LOOKS like a good movie, but when you start to peel it back, there's not much there. That's a major problem with a lot of Burton films. Style trumps substance so often. Granted, he usually has such a unique and memorable design sense, but often it isn't backed up by compelling depth.
