Interesting guesses so far! Maybe I should post numbers 5 through 2 tomorrow, then save #1 for its own day, to see if more folks want to guess. But maybe that's prolonging things unnecessarily.

@PIayer_0 I think I first heard Become as Gods in VGMC13, and I supported it shortly after. It got into 14 too but I didn't support it because it had just been in and had done pretty badly.

Fun fact about An Open Window: it's one of only two songs in the top 10 to never have been in VGMC.

It's such a me song. So much intersection of my taste. Though I guess everything in this topic is a me song, really!

And yes, thank for your upload! I didn't listen to it all the way through so I have to trust it won't turn into the Flintstones theme halfway through!

Top Ten time let's goooo

10.
NieR: Automata
Birth of a Wish (Become as Gods)
Keiichi Okabe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqo4BhGVJR0

What a convenient time to upload this song...!

Anyway, there are few songs more than me than this. Intense final boss style, robotic and repetitive vocals that play off normal human singing, that weird guitar-like instrument that flutters in quieter moments (its also present in Umineko the executioner). This is a song I had on loop for probably over an hour the first day I heard it.

9.
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass
An Open Window
Kasey Ozymy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpM3yGLvhcw

If you think of Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass (thats a big if), you probably think of the creepy/glitchy/off-kilter songs. An Open Window, on the other hand, is nothing like those. Its soft but gorgeous, the epitome of my happy but wistful taste.

8.
G-Darius
KIMERA II
Hisayoshi Ogura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW0Zb879wao

Industrial noises, chopped up vocal samples, movement from busy to calm, KIMERA II is a song that never loses a step. Its hard to describe exactly what effect it has on me, but it has my focus from beginning to end, without fail, every single time.

7.
beatmania IIDX 22 PENDUAL
Despair of ELFERIA
Naoyuki Sato
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcuSgJnEMIw

Nekomata Master is in contention for my favorite composer. I love almost everything Ive heard from him. Despair of ELFERIA shows his more intense side, with a lush soundscape thats as beautiful as it is nerve-wracking.

ELFERIA used to be my number 1. Then Mr. Bones came along and knocked it down. Now the skeleton has wandered off again, and ELFERIA is allll the way down to #7. Will it ever be able to make a comeback...?

6.
Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
Chant This Charm
Mariko Nanba, Tomoya Ohtani
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSgFJKtVCi0

Anyone whos played in one of my VGMGGs probably wont be surprised by this, as its the outro to most of my lists. Chant This Charm is probably the happiest piece of game music Ive ever heard. Its such a charming (dohoho), wholesome time, something I just want to share with everyone.

oops sorry here's today's five

68. If you like grungy battle themes, you might like:
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Battle C2 (Challenge Quest Boss Battle)
Toshiki Konishi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHyf8fHloow

This was my last-minute longshot push in last years nominations but nobody went with it. Its a moody, energetic battle song that always gets me pumped up.

66. If you like Mega Man X: Corrupted - Skyway (Hurricane Hoatzin Stage), you might like:
Mega Man X
Opening Stage
Setsuo Yamamoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkhIGJsYb4I

This is almost certainly the most well-known song on this list outside of the top 10. Mega Man X has had other VGMC rep before, but this ones flown under the radar. Its quite possibly my favorite soundtrack period, so I had to give it some love.

-

Everything here on out is a 10. My 10s arent perfect songs - theyre simply the absolute top of the heap, the ones I most often turn to. Lets go!

-

41. If you like Magical Chase Variations on a Ra Melody, you might like:
Magical Chase
Waltz of Meditation Part2
Hitoshi Sakimoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkR9polQh60

When Variations on a Ra Melody did so well, I figured Waltz of Meditation was a shoo-in to get in. But I have been denied! I go back and forth between which one I like more. Right now I have Ra Melody ranked higher (its at #29), but Waltz is still amazing. Its hard to imagine these two songs came from the TurboGrafx sound chip...

26. If you like chiptunes with lots of arpeggios and full, Follin-esque sound, you might like:
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil (GBC)
Scroll Stage
Alberto Gonzalez
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st4aSeFzEBA

Alberto Gonzalez is one of the greatest VGM composers, and its remarkable to me that so few people (outside of hardcore VGM circles) know who he is! Maybe its because he almost exclusively composed for crappy licensed games. Just maybe. :P

15. If you wish Katamari music was weirder, you might like:
Katamari Damacy
Angel Gifts
Yu Miyake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuiEgWun5po

I think its safe to say this is the weirdest song from the first Katamari Damacy. This song is an experience, particularly the moment when it shifts into a reprise of the Kings theme, which is followed by...well, listen to it yourself.

-

So thats 50 songs that have never been in VGMC before, all of which Ive rated between 9 and 10. But maybe youre not satisfied. Maybe you want the absolute cream of the crop, the songs I rank as my absolute, all-time (well, current time) favorites.

Well, youre about to get your wish. Next is my top 10. As a reminder, the guidelines from the first 50 dont apply anymore. Most of these are returners. And you can refer to the hints I provided at the start of the topic if you want to try and guess.

They're too busy posting "sounds like Cuphead music" on every possible jazz and/or big band song from other video games.

I saw a Youtube comment in a similar vein on a video that was like "here are all of these songs I've heard that are similar to this" and a subsequent comment called that person out. I mean, I guess we all do that to some extent, right?

I've never heard Plague Ghost, but I love it! (and I love love loooooove Tactical Field! It's my 19th favorite vgm ever) I've been wanting to explore the Senke No Ronde games, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I love Tactical Field! One of my favorite new discoveries from last VGMC. You might also like this song:

137. If you like folky music with a retraux tint, you might like:
A Short Hike
See You at the Top (Short Hike)
Mark Sparling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6OjhgzThM8

A charming, heartbreakingly wistful track. So good at evoking a strong sense of scale and place.

118. If you like ominous, bass heavy music, you might like:
Frozen Synapse
Schism
nervous_testpilot
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvYFGtW-UIo

This song is incredibly intimidating. It always reminds me of being stranded in an icy wasteland, and climbing up a glacier or something.

108. If you like CHVRCHES, you might like:
Boyfriend Dungeon
Without a Weapon (feat. Madeleine McQueen)
Marskye
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pueclYruzgQ

Synthpop thats chill and a little sad. Would probably get in alone on the strength of the line Loving you is war, and Im without a weapon. Thats real good.

93. If you like j-pop (or possibly j-rock), you might like:
Vib-Ribbon
Sunny Day
Laugh & Peace
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQzSUNMWybE

My favorite song from a unique (and short!) soundtrack. Sunny Day is Vib-Ribbon at its most hopeful and eventually frantic (theres no time, hurry up!), which is reflected in the songs fun times with tempo. If you like this, check out the rest its only seven songs long.

88. If you like big band, you might like:
Cuphead
Aviary Action
Kristofer Maddigan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSRAdi1wVW0

What happened to all the love for this soundtrack? I never see anyone talk about it anymore. Aviary Action is my favorite song from Cuphead. Come for the Ride of the Valkyries homage, stay for the triumphant main theme near the middle.

196. If you like Neotokyo Imbrium, you might like:
Neotokyo (2004)
ne-something3.ogg
Ed Harrison
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fE0kPJRxqU

Rare find: this is music from the original Neotokyo, when it was a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. This song has hints of Harrisons later compositions, particularly Imbrium.

173. If you voted against Glessing Way in Round 1 of last years VGMC, you might like:
Animorphs
Ending / Staff Roll
Randy Wilson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM4r5iBylvw

My second favorite Animorphs song, after Mission 5 Spaceship. Ending Staff Roll has all the glitchy crunchy goodness youd expect from this soundtrack.

172. If you like synthesized vocals with attitude, you might like:
Friday Night Funkin'
M.I.L.F
Kawai Sprite
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZy0EFF4PEI

M.I.L.F is a great example of FNFs call-and-response musical style. I have Philly Nice rated higher, but this is also a great example of the intense final boss style I tend to like so much.

-

Now we reach the vaunted 9.5/10 threshold. Buckle up...!

-

159. If you...uh...huh...
Doshin the Giant
Stroll Music
Tatsuhiko Asano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWV5BzZqjUA

Doshin defies explanation. There is all other music, there are things which are music adjacent, and there is Doshin. Behold his glory. Look upon his might. Pray for the day he Strolls into your life.

153. If you like club music with sick beats, you might like:
Streets of Rage
Fighting in the Street
Yuzo Koshiro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yln1vew2mFs

Its unfathomable to me that in sixteen years of VGMC, only one Streets of Rage song has ever made the bracket. The Genesis trilogy offers some of the best VGM, perhaps best typified by this iconic, beat-thumping stage 1 theme.

236. If you like Tactical Field and Lucky Charm, you might like:
Senko no Ronde DUO
Plague Ghost
Yasuhisa Watanabe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxGJmRnMeLc

A grittier, more abrasive Senko no Ronde song that still has all the charm and lush, crystally soundscapes Yack is so good at.

228. If you like Osamu Sato but wish his music was less accessible, you might like:
Roly-Polys no Nanakorobi Yaoki
Eyes - Stare
Osamu Sato
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSgXk_ujqp8

This is some educational game Sato made. It seems filled with the unique artstyle and content he became infamous for in the game industry. The music is Weird with a capital W this particular track isnt too strange, but its basically a short loop repeated over and over, with somewhat harsh samples. I love it! If you like Sato, youre probably open to things like this, so give it a listen.

216. If you like high-concept music, you might like:
Off-Peak
Revealed
Archie Pelago
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwRsPqQxdGk

If you participated in the last BOST, you might remember this game. The soundtrack is full of these powerful instrumentals that give off the vibe of live performances. Very tough to describe this one (hence my label of high concept).

199. If you like Celtic music (and what B8er doesnt???), you might like:
Ragnarok Online II
HODO
Yoko Kanno
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdTqZQORucQ

Din Don Din Don Dan Deedly Din Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth gets the attention, but I like this track way more. Really great vocals too.

197. If youlike catchy GBA music, you might like:
Donkey Kong Country 3 (GBA)
Rockface Rumble
David Wise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wbs1JqaxAk

I actually like the DKC3 GBA soundtrack more than the DKC2 soundtrack and I love DKC2. Wise sat out for DKC3 SNES but came back in full glory for the GBA. Theres not a sleeper among the bunch.

280. If you like weird, abrasive chiptunes, you might like:
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Metroid Nest
Ryoji Yoshitomi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1oShseb6RkE

The Metroid II soundtrack is one of Nintendos most bizarre. There are a few conventional tracks and the rest is experimental or even outright noise. Metroid Nest isnt even the weirdest song in the game, but its my favorite, with a chiptune heartbeat backing the shrill notes.

263. If you like 80s music with plenty of samples, you might like:
Xenon 2: Megablast
Intro
Bomb the Bass
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6jNosHmHG8

This Amiga tune is one of the first VGM to (mostly) accurately play back a non-VGM song. DJ Bomb the Bass contributed this funky tune, and its many samples and crunchy bass are a perfect fit for the Amiga.

258. If you think EarthBound music is too weird, you might like:
EarthBound
Your Name, Please
Akio Ohmori, Ritsuo Kamimura, Keiichi Suzuki, Hirokazu Tanaka
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rAOhPF3Gog

EarthBound has a very strange soundtrack, and Name Your Friends, the name entry theme, is pretty out there, but I think its more accessible than some of, say, the battle themes. So if you want to give this games soundtrack a chance but youve been put off by some of the songs, give this one a listen.

246. If you like the Shatter soundtrack, you might like:
Zen Puzzle Garden
Mizuumi no Tera
Module
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdIiMKnryVU

Module composed both this and Shatter, and though the instrumentation is vastly different for Zen Puzzle Garden, you can still pick up their signature style.

238. If you like danceable beats with Asian flair, you might like:
Deus Ex
The Synapse
Alexander Brandon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYqv75ANPik

The Deus Ex soundtrack covers a lot of ground. Of the songs Ive heard from it, this is my favorite from the beginning notes.

335. If you like Weather Channel music, you might like:
SimCity 4
Wheels of Progress
Andy Brick
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sX4HqntdXtE

Wheels of Progress has a self-evident name in that it sounds exactly like what it is: slowly building, slowly moving upward, one determined step at a time.

330. If you like moody FM synth, you might like:
YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of This World
Fate
Ryu Umemoto
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQgwCJ9r3B4

My favorite YU-NO song. So menacing, with wonderful surges in intensity throughout.

322. If you like Gust soundtracks (and who doesnt???), you might like
Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland
Devil's Tango
Ken Nakagawa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_LXIFX2M2M

Oh hey I know this series. Im not normally that into the Atelier songs that get in every year, but this ones great. Lots of fun. Credit to Arti for introducing this to me a few years ago.

320. If you like poppy platformer songs, you might like:
Zool 2
Swan Lake
Patrick Phelan, Neil Biggin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM_6bLC077o

Fun fact: this is the Amiga CD32 version of this game. This song is completely different in all the other versions. Which is a shame, because its fantastic.

317. If you like Rose Guns Days Axelle-ratio, you might like:
TRianThology
Facili-tasia
xaki
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWYjM7mwoa8

Like Axelle-ratio, this is a xaki composition that gradually increases in BPM and intensity. Its a pretty whirlwind ride.

I hope people are listening! Here's five more; see if any of them strike your fancy.

372. If you like DM DOKURO but think the Calamity songs that get into VGMC are too in-your-face, you might like:
Terraria Calamity Mod
Outcast of the Sulphurous Seas (Theme of the Aquatic Scourge)
DM DOKURO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF1tUy6QcPs

Again with the aquatic themes. I wouldnt call Theme of the Aquatic Scourge soothing, but it combines the inherent tranquility of water-themed VGM with the driving energy the Calamity soundtrack is known for.

366. If you like spooky horror music, you might like:
Observer
Wolfman
Arkadiusz Reikowski
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7hgEENsRvE

Lots of spooky horror music tropes on display with this song: rattling and clicking noises, oppressive sound design, a gradual build in intensity. Very effective at conveying a mood.

364. If you like New Age music, you might like:
Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD)
Jurassic Beach
Spencer Nilsen
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q5zs7mQHkU

The Sega CD Ecco games are full of New Agey type songs like this. This is my second favorite (I have Sky Tides ranked higher), but I think this is the better song, for whatever thats worth. So peaceful and haunting.

353. If you like Chrono Trigger but want to listen to a lesser-played track, you might like:
Chrono Trigger
The Brink of Time
Yasunori Mitsuda
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=524Mi-kpICA

JFC this is the fourth link Ive had to swap in for this one song, a song probably everybody knows already. Uh yeah, this is Chrono Trigger. Ive always enjoyed the spooky yet peaceful vibes this gives off. Certainly one of the hidden gems from a well-traveled soundtrack.

346. If you like music thats big and kind of experimental, you might like:
Samorost 3
Taste of Tea (Cosmic Version)
Tom Dvok
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ9t1YNJakY

I have a hard time putting Taste of Tea into words. Its not experimental in that its particularly weird. It just doesnt have a definable melody, and its presentation is deceptively simple. But its very big. Give it a listen and youll see.

Hey look, it's five more songs!

431. If you thought Clash on the Big Bridge should have lost in round 3, you might like:
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
The Glittering City of Yusnaan
Mitsuto Suzuki, Aska Kaneko
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8tXcnEbF-A

My favorite discovery from the Final Fantasy Music Contest! I love how it gives off this vibe of happy but desperate, sorrowful but joyful at the same time.

418. If you like the Gimmick! soundtrack, you might like:
Jack Bros.
Dragon's Belly (Level 4)
Hiroyuki Yanada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2nNyXzdBe8

The Virtual Boy is home to some real musical gems, including this soundtrack. Did you know this is technically the first Megami Tensei game to see a North American release?

414. If you like intense boss themes with complex time signatures, you might like:
Kirby Super Star
Marx's Theme
Jun Ishikawa, Dan Miyakama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enhTx9gpzYA

I like other songs from Super Star more, but I really appreciate the batshit intensity of Marxs Theme. This song is just all over the damn place in the best possible ways.

413. If you like deeply atmospheric ambient songs, you might like:
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Spirit Temple
Koji Kondo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XizN7NpgXg

Zelda dungeon themes are criminally underrated in the series musical pantheon. Everybody talks about Forest Temple, but where are my Spirit Temple fans? Spirit Temple has a main instrument (not sure what it is) that leads you on a winding musical pathway as you explore the dungeons physical pathways.

405. If you like chiptune workout music, you might like:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
Scene 1 (Fire!!)
Kozo Nakamura
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTWCnjyJmqo

Konami during the NES years really put out some amazing songs. The peak for me is probably TMNT2. Case in point: there are like two or three other songs from this game I gave a 9 to.

It's true that you won't be able to consistently rate everything accurately if you used increments of, say, 0.1. I don't think anyone can do that. On average over time, however, I'm sure you willl see a difference between the music rated a 7.6 as opposed to songs that are a 7.3.

Maybe you're right. I think I do that already simply by virtue of having so much practice with ratings. Like sometimes in my head I label 8s as "low 8s" or "high 8s." Sometimes though I don't know until I actually get to placing the song. It's an interesting experience.

This is the SpongeBob comes back to Bikini Bottom after moving away for ten years and seeing how the towns has changed without him or maybe how little its changed song.

496. If you wanted to vote in NFUNs Phantasy Star Online 2 contest but werent sure if youd like anything, you might like:
Phantasy Star Online 2
DYREINA
Mitsuharu Fukuyama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TE6E8tC8CmI

I love the vocals, they really carry DYREINA for me, but theres also a lot of fun with tempos and time signatures.

467. If youve always wondered hey, what would an entire soundtrack of acapella music sound like, you might like:
Crash Twinsanity
Evil Twins
Spiralmouth
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjtW_baldys

Crash Twinsanity is an endlessly creative soundtrack, with acapella ensemble Spiralmouth constantly contorting their voices in different ways. Evil Twins is probably the big song from the game, but if you like it, the rest of the soundtrack also offers more of the same!

462. If you like Secret of Mana Prophecy, you might like:
Secret of Mana (2018)
Prophecy
Hiroki Kikuta arr. Tsutomu Narita
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoNApmIPIJ8

Or you might not. This soundtrack is divisive as hell. Personally I love both versions. The 2018 one almost got in last year so I have high hopes for this year!

449. If you like literally anything by Hideki Naganuma, you might like:
Jet Set Radio
Grace & Glory
Hideki Naganuma
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcxllvjUo2k

Naganuma has one of the most self-consistent styles if you like at least one song by him, youll probably like others. Grace & Glory is my favorite song from a great soundtrack; its unusually intense and final bossy for Naganuma.

Would folks rather I stick to five songs/day, or drop down to three? I don't want anyone following along to feel behind.

Can confirm that there is at least one song from the FFMC in the 50 9s (though not necessarily the top 10).

Happy to see some guesses and impressions so far!

You really need to reduce those increments. Surely you've rated enough music by now that you can more narrowly pinpoint how much you like music! ;)

I've actually considered that, but the reason I haven't is because I feel like then it almost feels like work, haha. My approach is basically look over the spreadsheet until I find songs I think I enjoy on roughly the same level (8, 7.5, 7, etc.), then scroll around until I find a few songs I like more, and a few songs I like less. Normally I can tell what number a song "feels like" as I'm listening to it, though sometimes the sheet convinces me otherwise, like if I think something is an 8 but I like a bunch of 7.5s more than it. It's definitely not an exact science, especially since opinions can change depending on my mood. Going into more precise increments would make it seem like more of a chore! At least I think it would - I've never tried it. (There are some borderline 9.5-10s that could basically be 9.75...)

I'll also say that below 7 is much more arbitrary, since I don't remember those songs nearly as much as the higher rated ones.

tag. i love rwlh music and i am excitied to see what it is now, Also how do you rank so many songs,

I don't even rank everything I listen to! I've been maintaining the spreadsheet since 2019 or thereabouts, whenever the last BOST was (the first song rated was Undertale - Undertale, at a 7.5), so that's probably why it seems like a big number.

543. If you like vaporwave, you might like:
The 9th Annual Vanilla Level Design Contest
Abstract Map
Torchkas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvFF26nR1JY

Starting things off with quite possibly the most obscure thing on this list, a song made with the SNES soundchip featured heavily in the SMW hack Marios Mystery Meat that samples a 1983 song called Another Life by Kano. This is barely even eligible for VGMC, but the hosts gave me the go ahead...!

528. If you like Waterworld Diving, you might like:
Shinsekai: Into the Depths
Beyond Hades
Chikara Aoshima
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHFRp1ac2BE

One of many songs I enjoy that simulate the feel of exploring a deep underwater chasm and finding a teeming city in the abyss.

523. If you think Crazybus is too peaceful, you might like:
RuneScape 3
Chaos of Corruption
Ashton Mills (Mod Slippers)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5BI6V_cZRs

Apparently this plays in a battle with a Lovecraftian eldritch monster. Its probably even more effective in-game, but I love how abrasive and cacophonous it is even without the context.

522. If you like Mega Man X Opening Stage, you might like:
Mega Man X: Corrupted
Skyway (Hurricane Hoatzin Stage)
Dominic Ninmark
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdoRRKcDOj8

Another barely eligible song, this is from a fangame without a release date. It features sharp, aggressive MMX samples that would give Storm Eagle a run for his money.

516. If you like music that doesnt take itself seriously, you might like:
At Least There Is Ceda Cedovic
The Elephant's Foot of Obnoxious Music
Harvey Rothman
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHM65qXZFyI

This song is an experience. Just try to ignore the pig snorting throughout the first third. Or maybe dont! Do as you like.

hi

This is a topic in which I will talk about my current top 10 video game songs. Before that, Ill talk about 50 other songs that Ive rated 9/10 or higher. These 50 songs have never been in VGMC before. Some of them Ive nominated before. Some Ive used in guessing games. Some Ive never talked about before. Itll be FUN and you will LOVE IT.

This topic serves multiple purposes. First and foremost, its a way to share music that I like. Youre certainly not going to like every song, but Im confident youll find at least one thing you enjoy.

Secondly, its a way to introduce music you might be interested in nominating for VGMC. My personal threshold for supporting a VGMC nomination is nothing lower than a 9/10, so theoretically all of these songs are supportable for me. That doesnt mean I will support it, but everything here is fair game.

Third, its a way to reflect on what songs have gotten into VGMC before. Some of these songs are from games without any VGMC rep, but some are deeper cuts from games or series with plenty of rep. A few you may even have heard before!

Fourth, its a way to show off my taste. I like a lot of really diverse music and I tried to pick 50 songs that reflected different aspects of my taste. I didnt just take the top 60 I specifically picked songs I would have something, however small, to say about. Some of these songs arent even my favorite from the game theres a Chrono Trigger song here, for example, and there are multiple Chrono Trigger songs I like more, including a few that are unused in VGMC. But Id rather talk about this one, which is why I picked it.

Fifth, its a way to actually do something with the massive rating spreadsheet I started almost three years ago. In that time, Ive rated over 3700 VGM from 0 to 10 in increments of .5. Most of them are 7 or higher, because I started the spreadsheet to help me keep track of music I actually like. But now I get to show some of that off! Yay!

Finally, Mr. Bones The First Thing is no longer my number 1! In fact, its not even in the top 10, and will not be appearing in this topic. GASP So consider this topic a formal crowning in of my new favorite song.

Each song will have a link, some light metadata, and an If you like (this particular thing), you might like this song, as a way to encourage everyone to listen and find new songs you might like. If youre on the B8 Discord, my goal is to run two listening parties once the list is done (probably 30 songs per party), but if you want to listen along with the topic, I certainly wont mind that either :)

Note that the top 10 are not bound by the same rules as the first 50. Many of them are returners. At least one won an entire VGMC. Try not to judge them. Also, feel free to predict them Ive used a few in lists and been a vocal fan of others, but some might just surprise you. Here are some hints:
2 Square, 1 Nintendo, 1 Sega.
2 songs are from before 1995.
2 songs are from after 2015.
1 rhythm game song.
3 vocal songs, plus 1 song with vocal samples and 1 song with synthesized vocals.
1 song longer than 8 minutes.
3 VGMC retirees, including 1 winner.
And the top song, which doesnt fit into any of these categories.
Have fun :)

EDIT: One more thing: if you want to listen along with the topic, I'll be posting the videos to this playlist:

Okay! Here you go, 24 songs. I loosely followed some of your "weaknesses" but a lot of this is me pitching things and seeing what sticks. You generally have an open mind in these topics, so I planned around that.

Zo Keating - Sun Will Set (7:57)

Finally, here's the last song. I had four minutes left so I typed "240 seconds" into Youtube. I thought it would be fun to nominate a true wildcard, so I made a point of not even listening to it. I have no clue what it sounds like.

Alf Inge Wang - In-Game Music (240 Second Countdown) (from Kahoot) (4:06)

Cool! Looking forward to this.

Last year I asked what genres/styles/etc. of music you didn't have a lot of experience with, and I tailored my nominations accordingly. So I'll ask that again - what are your musical "weaknesses," so to speak? I still have the post you made for last year's topic, but I figure it's worth asking again, since your tastes and exposure may have changed since then.
