Ruthless and unforgiving exploration of the yakuza crime families. Shares similar themes with The Irishman in the way that it presents just how ungrateful and exploitative the heads of these underworld crime organizations are for the tireless years of loyalty. Feels almost claustrophobic in the way its always throwing the camera in the thick of it, with faces and its violence up close, face-to-face with the viewer.

Great catch with this. I forgot about BWHAH after a while and never tried to connect it to any of the modern movies on the list, but this is dead on.

Don't entirely agree. There are similarities to be sure but some key differences

- The Room is much much longer and needs to hold your attention to get to the silly stuff

- Zero Wing stands on its own better. Show someone unfamiliar with what The Room is and they might get bored before they get to the really stupid quotable stuff. Zero Wing has you right out of the gates as long as you speak English.

- Zero Wing is a competent albeit generic story where quirkinesses in the writing/translation make it memorable. The Room on the other hand doesn't suddenly become a good or even decent story if it's cast well or the presentation is improved.

A better comparison would be Revenge of the Sith. There isn't a ton of meat to what Revenge of the Sith is, but you could make it a pretty good story with some good casting and tweaks to the dialogue and presentation. However it does have a following that it wouldn't have if the quirks were removed due to being enhanced by the ridiculousness of it.

Like I probably wouldn't give The Room a 1, but I wouldn't give it a 6.5 either. Probably a 2.5 or 3? It's like a 1 and lifted by the ridiculousness of it. Zero Wing is a 4 or 5 lifted up by the absurdity.

I agreed with you up until the Revenge of the Sith part. Something about that doesn't quite click because RotS has a strong (but poorly executed) tragic arc at its heart. It's a good story told poorly. Zero Wing is a serviceable story told hilariously badly.

Not saying I have a better comparison at the moment, but RotS just isn't working for me.

Horror is no stranger to the concept of mirrors. Bloody Mary, Candyman, Evil Dead II, Oculus, Black Mirror, American Werewolf, the countless mirror scares across the board I mean pick a horror property and it probably has some type of scare to do with a mirror. In a way, all horror functions as a mirror to society, and mirrors function as an easy way to get some thematic points across easily to your audience.

Mirrors, a VERY loose remake of the South Korean film Into the Mirror, had so much promise. Of course, American horror remakes proved to be all the rage in the 2000s, spurned on by notable successes such as The Grudge or The Ring. Though like many of its ilk, Mirrors fails to truly capture the macabre, reflective qualities of the original.

Its a film about a suspended detective that gets a new job as the night watchman in a burnt out luxury department store, who then discovers weird happenings with the mirrors that dot all over the building. That's cool. That's interesting, and at first, it's easy to get sucked into the film's alluring atmosphere. I really like the look of the store and some creative shots let us bask in the structure's strange architecture and off-putting mannequins.

Kiefer Sutherland plays the lead, and he mostly does a good job, but I feel like he overacts his "paranoia" scenes in a way that is too exaggerated. The rest of the cast isn't even close to being engaging, especially Paula Patton as Kiefer's wife, who feels especially checked out and rather uninterested in anything that's happening. Unfortunately, this leaves nothing to really be entertained by between the film's sparse but unnerving deaths (the death of Kiefer's sister is the best part of the movie easily), as the plot chugs along at a glacial pace, and the technical details get repetitive and too dull for its own good. At a certain point, we get the intent - mirrors bad. It's boring to just keep demonstrating that if you're not going to have any substance to it. The police procedural elements here are especially clich and Kiefer's stereotypical "disgraced cop" routine with the estranged family just adds to the general sameness of the film.

Mirrors picks up a bit again in a decently exciting climax with an eye-popping demonic possession set-piece, but we're never really treated to any answers to how the supernatural works and not in the "leave you wanting more" way, just the "please give me something to latch on to here" way. The film also never truly commits to the thematic promise of having mirrors as a central conceit to the film. What should have been a smart exploration of our main character's inner insecurities is diluted by sticking too close to an established formula on how this type of film is supposed to turn out.

In short, it's a mundane piece of horror in a director's filmography with highs (High Tension, Crawl) & lows (Mirrors, Piranha 3D).

Great job on this. I saw Mirrors in theaters as a teenager and was blown away by it to the point that I was afraid to look in my rearview mirror while driving home.

Then I watched it on DVD a few years later and saw it for what it is: a disjointed horror/mystery/thriller with only one character worth a damn. Like you said though, the final set piece is great, and the initial atmosphere is superb. Shame everything things out in the middle.

Very disingenuous statement.
1. Mario 64 has nearly twice as many levels as BK
2. Mario 64 makes a lot less of the collectables mandatory, even within sub-objectives.
3. Banjo has more collectables (honeycombs, mumbos, etc) that you aren't listing.
It's not really in the number or even the number of types, it's about how they're implemented. That was my point. The fact that you can completely ignore 1670 of the 1740 "collectables" in Mario 64 (you can ignore even more, really, because there are way more than 100 coins per level available to grab) and still beat it is a huge deal.

Banjo has abilities and transformations.

For the record, I slightly prefer Mario 64.

This movie is pretty much the baseline gangster movie, in my opinion. Doesn't do anything spectacular, but doesn't mess up anywhere. It's kinda like the fodder line for this ranking: anything below Little Caesar, I have at least one major problem with.

This was EXACTLY how I approached my rankings. If I ranked a movie lower than Little Caesar, I disliked the movie. Anything above LC, I liked.

It was also my logic for favoring LC as #30 in the Vegas odds. I figured that no one would love it enough to offset the inevitable low scores.

Until Dawn's aspirations of capturing a horror movie feel were definitely fully realized here, the game's self-seriousness belied by its ensemble cast. Everyone from Rami Malek's off-putting Josh to Nichole Sakura's whiny Emily fits perfectly in the slasher space, and the cast in general lends a sense of both real emotion and appropriately made-up cheese. There's quite a ton of red herrings and I feel the game almost drowns itself in twists and turns but it manages to stay afloat through solid writing & direction. If anything, a lot of what drags down the game's story is actually the choice system. Now - the system itself is well-thought out, with the obvious butterfly effect gimmickry, but at least on your first time through playing blind, I feel like you can sometimes make what seems like the correct choice (the part with Matt and Emily dangling precariously from the collapsed watchtower is a perfect example of this) only for it to blow up in your face without much chance to stop it. The game's story seems unfairly torturous in that sense, and the game also doesn't have a great sense of when it's necessary to switch to another character, lacking proper pacing. Sometimes you can play a straight hour as Mike and then switch to another character like Chris which comparatively might only take 5-10 minutes at best. While I understand the need to constantly switch character perspectives, and it's an interesting mechanic, I also feel like some characters are given way more attention and importance in the story over others. Still, the game's main plot line of Josh's revenge mixed with supernatural Wendigo chaos makes up for it greatly. The way Josh's pathos are explored through the wonderfully engrossing psychiatrist scenes and the raw desperation and self-loathing feels genuine and not over-dramatic. Now, I do feel like Josh gets a bit too loopy in later scenes, but just the way everything fit so perfectly together and that there's actually ANOTHER threat out there just kept the tension so high even after the reveal. Ultimately, the game's unique blend of many horror styles and the immersion of being trapped on a mountain of horrors is a lot of fun, and though I have my issues with how choices are executed, it never drags down the game enough to being unenjoyable.

Bravo, sir.

It's boilerplate "Here's what P5 would be without all the extra fixings and stuffing." The ideas at play are generalized Persona stuff. It's still good to see the Phantom Thieves. They have their moments, but again; this is basic spinoff junk leftovers.

For the first two jails, sure. They're basically a reimagining of P5's first two palaces in terms of themes/overloads. But after that P5S develops its own identity. Zenkichi's subplot with Akane and Sophia/Ichnose's arcs are way too good to be considered leftovers.

Just beat this last night, so there's probably some recency bias here, but I absolutely loved it.

Getting my favorite gang back together for a roadtrip is a great start, and the story went in some surprisingly emotional directions. I never expected to love Zenkichi or Sophia the way I did, and the main plot really took off after the second jail. Even the early jails did a great job of making me appreciate the characters I wasn't crazy about in P5 (Ann, Yusuke, Haru).

Just a fantastic overall story experience in terms of character, plot, and themes (Social Media app as the freedom-stifling villain? Spot on.)
