Theyre one of a few groups that are easy to identify within the hospital system as probably not being able to pay any bills. So theyre rushed out of hospitals ASAP so they dont hog bed space. In my hospital supposedly, patients with no insurance gets emergency medicaid only for their stay. But the costs do add up. It is true that in my hospital, we do tend to rush out patients who are stable for discharge (social workers and the higher ups are always on our asses to do so), but we definitely make sure that the patient is "cleared" for discharge when the acute problem is corrected. --- |

| megamanfreakXD 07/04/19 11:08:07 AM #29 | Why is it easier for a smoker to get a lung transplant than to get a liver transplant? That is actually not true. Here is a list of contraindications for a lung transplant. Active smoking is one of the criteria. https://i.gyazo.com/99993450493c091092a4f32f4ced1e9c.png Half the people in the hospital are there because of bad choices. But alcoholics are the bad people who get 2 or 3 chances then it's out on the street, not even a handful of librium. Librium (and ativan for that matter) is not used outpatient because withdrawal usually resolves inpatient therefore you don't take it long term. Also, it's not like we "don't care". We provide a lot of social placements/assistance to help treat alcohol intoxication/abuse but the patients don't care/lost to follow up/goes back to drinking again. I can't help people who don't want to help themselves. Why aren't people with stints and heart transplants from decades of eating badly eventually told not to come back until they fix themselves? Because surgery yields a poor benefit to risk ratio if the main problem is mainly diet. Methadone can be given orally with no risk of surgery complications and is given in a monitored setting. Two different things. Why do people with an STD get a chuckle and joke from the MD about wrapping it up and we get treated like we personally offended the doctor? Never happens. We just do our job. Why don't the obese on their third 100,000 dollar bypass get lectured and treated like garbage? Why isn't the person with a fractured leg from a very dangerous hobby left to suffer for hours on a gurney with no pillow in a room with a camera? wat --- |

Students who are carribean students are considered international med grads also, but are also "US citizens" since a majority who don't get into a med school in the US would go overseas to apply for these schools that automatically take them. IMGs have a much more difficult time to get matched (due to the reputation of these caribean schools not properly filtering the students they take, and the education (can't specifically comment on this because I didn't attend one, but I have heard bad things). These schools blew up so it became "hard to ignore" in a way so these residents are more common and "notable" in residency at this point. But real IMGs (who are foreign, needs a working visa, have an even more difficult time getting matched in the U.S because some places do not accept visas. So in terms of ease of getting matched U.S. Allopathic > U.S. citizen IMG = U.S. D.O > foreign IMG --- |
