The market is saturated with people seeking such work, and employers can and will reject anyone for even the most trivial of reasons. Getting a degree won't help. You'll overqualify yourself out of even more jobs, and anything in your field will be full of lifers, or outsourced to somewhere you wouldn't even visit with an armed entourage in most cases. I feel like asking someone in the field would prove a little more helpful than most of what's said here, but YMMV. I started studying last month and scheduled my exam in two weeks. People who have I asked on reddit who took the Math MTEL (Massachusetts Teaching exam) for math keep telling me they're easy but I can definitely see why a math major finds them easy, they are not all that difficult but for me I just can't grasp the concepts well enough to know which ones to apply on wordy problems.
