You have the story playing out, and then every so often the format shifts (dialogue to song for musicals, past tense to present for ROTS) and a character delivers their "I am" or "I want" moment, and then it's back to the story. I don't really remember it enough to articulate my issues with the movie, but I remember thinking it made no sense and was just a series of excuses for action setpieces. The characters I loved from First Class had been changed to fit what the writers needed them to be (not just personality, but sometimes backstory too?), and the whole time travel conceit just... never works. Any DM worth their salt knows how to let plans go sideways and not fudge the numbers when PCs realize they need to kill someone before you wanted them to die. In my campaign, the main villain was traveling with the PCs for a bit and I was scared to death they were going to figure out he was the main villain and knife him in their sleep.
