JJ had a villain problem in 9 in the sense that RJ killed off his lame ass palpatine ripoff. So what does he do? Fall back on the knights of Ren? His own brainchild? Nah. Relegates them to useless henchmen levels and resurrects fucking Palpatine.

I stopped watching Marvel movies, and among the several reasons why was the endless revolving door of villains.

But episode 9 wasn't a standalone film, it was the third in a trilogy. Are you saying the main villain of the climactic film should've been a gaggle of characters that have been name-dropped once? Sounds like a great way to have a bunch of people say "literally who?" They have no buildup, no heft (For the record, Palps was a terrible terrible solution to this problem).

"But Lucas introduced Grievous in ROTS!" Well, Grievous sucked. Even my teenage self knew Grievous sucked. And it wasn't just the stupid name, it was the fact that he was a pointless villain introduced and killed off in a movie that needed to be using its screentime on more important things. Just like TROS needed to use its screentime on more important things than the knights of Ren - even in an alternate universe where they're the *chuckle* main villains.

JJ had all these good ideas in 7 and then by 9 when the ideas are still on the table, clueless how to use them. Rey. Kylo. Finn. Nights of Ren. Poe. Good ideas. Good characters. Wasted.

And when he got close to a good idea in 9 he immediately undoes it in his own movie. Rey using force lightning to kill Chewie? Most interesting plot development since you put a cross guard on a lightsabre. Bitch you thought. Psych. Got us so good. Just a misdirection undone 5 minutes later.

No stakes. Nothing happens. Waste of everyones time. And just a boring heap of garbage in the end.

Meh, the knights of Ren were a team effort.
JJ fucked up by not putting them in 7 at all. Should have cut Starkiller Base from the plot entirely and used the extra time to introduce them.

Then RJ put the nail in their coffin by not writing them into the sequel.

Now you have one film left to introduce a "new" group of villains, build them up to be compelling, and wrap up their story. All while satisfying the other demands of the third film in an epic trilogy. It wasn't doable. Frankly, after the one-two punch of TFA and TLJ, almost nothing was doable. TROS didn't need to be anywhere near as bad as it was, but it was never going to be good.

I've set my goal at one new chapter every two weeks. Pretty slow, but my chapters have consistently broken the 7k word mark, so it's not as shameful as it looks.

Not in the slightest, lol. The six published were commission work and paid like shit. I'm hoping this big one will take off, but the odds are against it. Bottom line is, if you're in the novel industry to make money, find a new career.

One strategy I've seen have some success (for other people. I've never tried it) is the quantity over quality approach. If you can write decently and quickly, you can shit out a book every 6 months and self publish it on amazon. If you know your genre keywords, pay $100 for a genre-appropriate cover, and write good ad copy, you can get a pretty steady stream of sales going and even build a following. But rapid release is key to this strategy, as is having a grasp of tropes and genre expectations. If you price your books at $1.99 and sell 10 copies of each a week, you're making $400 a week, which isn't terrible for a writer. If you're good enough to be successful and sell a hundred of each a week, you're making a damned good living.

TFA is great until they leave Jakku and then becomes a soulless paint-by-numbers adventure where no thought is given to emotional stakes and nothing matters.

TLJ puts on a veneer of sophistication but ultimately betrays and contradicts itself by falling back to the core principles of Star Wars and thus ends up a (well-shot) muddled mess that doesn't really say anything.

Both have things they do well, but are mediocre to bad overall (and still better than the prequels don't get me wrong)
