In the cartoon, John Stewart was the Green Lantern and Hal Jordan never existed.

All of the sudden, here comes this movie about a White guy claiming to be Green Lantern. This was worse than having an unknown superhero. Young people knew who their Green Lantern was and it wasn't this dude. It genuinely felt like Hollywood had randomly selected a White romantic comedy lead out of a hat because they didn't feel like a Black superhero would sell. (Or that they didn't want him to sell.) You can't just resurrect a dead hero that people are unfamiliar with. When Blue Beetle got a movie, they went straight to Blue Beetle 3 because that's the character that the 24-and-under target demographic associates with that character. That's the right move to make.

If a character is unknown, you can do what you want with them. If they're known, you have to meet audience expectations. Yes, a Green Lantern movie starring Denzel Washington or Edris Elba would have absolutely sold more than the same starring Ryan Reynolds.
