***spoilers***

Well that movie scared the fuck out of me, wow. I'm too tired to go into detail, but in terms of just raw, in-your-face terror that was one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. It's not top tier in terms of quality, but my god it does not let up the entire 81 minutes - there is barely time to catch your breath anywhere. It freaks me out to stare into the dark right now - I already have an irrational fear at nighttime that I'm going to suddenly start hallucinating - that was like the worst movie to see for that. Longer breakdown later. (maybe)

Just saw a spot for it on Twitter - I assume it's just been revealed? Too off for me to be that interested, yet.

It used to be the upcoming movie The Woods before it was reveled to be Blair Witch.

er, yeah, I heard about that. Meant to say "too far off", also. I like the original, I think I'll probably see it, not sure about in theaters, though.

It was fucking great.

A girl at my day camp was legit freaking out a bit when Dory wound up outside of the aquatic park, and was just kind of floating hopelessly into the void, after passing through the kelp. She was saying "I don't like this" while holding back tears. So, she might actually agree with you!

I should really check out this show.

I've really been loving it lately. It would not at all be considered a horror show, but when they do sprinkle in horror elements, or have a horror-geared episode, they do it very well.

Does anyone here watch Steven Universe? The "Rose's Room" episode does an *amazing* job at the 'something's slightly amiss'/Uncanny Atmosphere trope:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UncannyAtmosphere

I quite like that as a premise, and wrote a short story using it in college. There's also a Twilight Zone episode that employs it....like the guy's town looks the same but everyone's gone....

Man. I'm worried that's going to be just fucking terrible. Based on the cast and premise it seems very likely. The original plan for a prequel about the Morgans was so, so much more interesting. I'm still pissed they bailed on that.

In Ringu, a tubular thunderclap-like sound effect plays whenever the text overlay appears, counting down the number of days since the protagonist has watched the tape. In The Ring - for when they label Day 3, I think - it opens on a thunderstorm, which I think was almost certainly an intentional reference, which may seem super obvious but I somehow never made the connection.

Watching The Ring for ~the 15th time (not exaggerating). No film has, or likely ever will capture the perfect blend of sadness, fear, and surrealism like that one. My god it is beautiful. Hans Zimmer's score is on par in brilliance with the story's concept that was passed on from Ringu. Just finished the legendary cursed tape scene, imagery that starts out as simply confusing, invoking curiosity, but leads to something unspeakably horrifying. The visual tone is incredible, and I'm always reminded of the film anytime it's dimly lit - a little dreary out, overcast - but with plenty of thick green grass and foliage around.

I am just endlessly in love with this film. The fact that others have even come close for me at times - The Babadook, Psycho, The Sixth Sense - speak volumes about how good those films are.

EDIT - also JUST caught a sound effect reference to Ringu during a scene transition, that I had never noticed prior. Unbelievable that I can still discover new things about this movie even after watching it ~once/year.

aw man, didn't realize Topic #2 purged, I failed too

Glad you liked 10 Cloverfield Lane! Nice review. I actually love the ending as it creates a surreal, even somewhat beautiful moment, once Michelle (and the audience) finally reaches the surface. We're then thrown right back into the shit as - oh yeah, aliens actually are attacking, and it's not much better up here than it was down there. Howard's demise was actually quite satisfying for me, his body mutilated, leaving him with an ugly and horrifying appearance to match his inner-ugliness. This movie also featured one of the most shocking death scenes I've witnessed, Howard shooting Emmett almost on a whim. The camera focusing on Michelle, with the loud ringing to amplify shock and drone out Howard's attempts to calm her down, create a perfect effect. I think I had my hands on my head for much of the movie anyways, but that just blindsided me. Holy shit. I'm very tempted to give this movie a 10.

Can we also talk about how no one goes through more shit in a horror film than Mary Elizabeth Winstead?? Between this and The Thing prequel, goddam. She can't catch a break. Just brutal.

Oh, and as Geni mentioned in the last topic - the taboo scene......so good.
