Analysis

The writing was on the wall all contest for Metal Gear characters, but it was still impressive to see Solid Snake drop enough to lose to Zelda. The good news for him is that Zelda is strong and that Auron hasnt looked the greatest, though he did look okay against Sonic. Regardless on paper he should defeat Auron by more than what Sonic did last round.

Now if Solid **** makes his reappearance we could see an interesting match. While it wont be an instant victory for Auron it would give him a great chance to stay alive. Based on previous incarnations of Solid **** and that Aurons sprite wont be impressive like Frog was in 2004 we typically see Solid Snake 55/45 his weaker self. That should be enough to hold onto victory, but definitely not what Solid Snake wants to see. My prediction will be based on a normal picture.

Analysis

While Cloud and Sephiroth fell over the last decade or so Tifa has stayed relatively constant to the point where she finished ahead of Cloud and Sephiroth on the adjusted 2013 stats. Now I dont exactly believe Tifa is stronger than the two, but I do feel she is pretty close. Both Tifa and Sephiroth got similar performances against Samus and Mario respectively and direct matches aside the two seem to have similar strength.

Historically, Tifa has held up quite well against Sephiroth, avoiding SFF in 2/3 matches involving the two characters. Im not expecting SFF here either, for the most part Final Fantasy VII fans dont have a hierarchy of characters that is susceptible to SFF and if it were to occur, Id expect it to be relatively smaller than what we see among Nintendo characters.

Analysis

While I expected to see this match a little later in the contest, it was a struggle to choose between these two characters. A decent boost from Breath of the Wild would have placed Ganondorf within striking distance on Mega Man. After watching these two characters perform, I still think the chance for the upset is still here.

I give full props to Pikachu for winning his match, but at the same time he did get 56% against Zero which I see is comparable to what Ganondorf got against Dante. While some people may look at the performance against Vivi and think both Mega Man and Pikachu should be able to do better, I remind you that this Vivi is a lot stronger than what we have seen. He easily dispatched a Donkey Kong that easily rocked his four-pack which included Tidus and Leon Kennedy.

While Zelda has a bigger reason to boost from Breath of the Wild, I doubt Ganondorf would get nothing. Regardless, I suspect this match will be close, which will then set up another close encounter with Pikachu in the following round.

Analysis

On paper this should be an easy victory for Bowser, but I feel Alucard will make things quite difficult. Its quite clear that he has boosted since the last we have saw him, even against a weaker Cloud almost breaking 40% is quite impressive. If we hold Sora constant from 2010 this match would be quite the nail-biter. Of course, it is more likely that Sora is a bit weaker now while Bowser also has reason to be slightly stronger.

One of the downsides of the losers bracket is that it spoils the match for the championship bracket. If the match ends in a nail-biter or a blowout for one character we can pretty much deduce who wins between Cloud and Crono. If we were to make Cloud and Crono equals then Bowser would get 56.12% against Alucard, any massive deviation from that number will likely seal the victory for one of those characters.

How stronk does Zelda look right now?

I anticipated that even with the MGS decline it would knock him down from #2 to top 5 rather than to barely top 10.

If he is still borderline top 5 and on the same level as Cloud, Mario, Samus that means Zelda could be the potential #2. Its also possible Snake has just tanked hard and he might be below Megaman/Sonic/Crono now and that Zelda is still well below Samus/Mario/Cloud.

If we keep the relationship between Auron and Aerith constant she is expected to get 51.24% against Sonic.

Auron is probably weaker now, but regardless her performance against Aerith places Zelda in the lower noble nine region. Could Snake have dropped that much? Possibly. Regardless this likely won't place her as the number 2 though she should give any character a scare (before SFF).

Analysis

Heres a rematch no one really wanted. In 2013 Samus had no issue defeating Tifa and while in 2006 she needed a comeback to win, that was more due to the Zero Suit Samus picture than anything else. Theres a lot of discussion as to where Samus ranks within the Noble Nine outside that she would clearly lose to Link and Mario. From what Ive seen so far, she has a great chance at being the third strongest overall, but shell need to prove it.

Tifa did well to reach the championship bracket, but her performances against Mega Man X and Luigi shows that she isnt a Noble Nine breaker, at least not at the level where she could defeat Samus. Her match against Luigi has likely killed off any chance that she could be stronger than Cloud or Sephiroth, but that was always going to be a long shot.

Analysis

Sephiroth has been a monkey on Marios back during the early to mid contests and this will be his best chance at overcoming that mental block. Mario wasnt exactly decent in 2013, sure he lost to Vivi due to Ganondorf and rallies, but at the same time he would have underperformed by quite a lot. Vivi has since proven himself in this contest and while I feel the board may now consider Mario to be the number 2 its more due to no one else stepping up.

Sephiroth looked okay in his matches, nothing to suggest that he dropped in strength, but nothing that Mario couldnt replicate except maybe his performance against Ryu. Sephiroths best chance at winning is to hope that the characters in the main bracket have received a boost. I still dont quite believe it, but it would suggest why the Elite 8 characters have relatively underperformed.
