The so-called psychotically depressed person who tries to kill herself doesnt do so out of quote hopelessness or any abstract conviction that lifes assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fires flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. Its not desiring the fall; its terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling Dont! and Hang on!, can understand the jump. Not really. Youd have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.
-David Foster Wallace

Holy shit that is a perfect explanation

Agreed.

The thought of non existence is more comforting than life, for some.
That can be a realization reached after an innumerable different scenarios that leads a person to believe that.
Some don't get the support they need in order to see a different way.
We don't live in a society of prevention, we live in a society of aftermath.
That's a big part of the problem.

TopicIs suicide selfish when you have many people who love you?

It's selfish to those left behind because they suffer the loss.

But you have to look at it from a different angle.
Suicide is not always about being depressed.
It's about the feeling of hopelessness.
Hopelessness is a lot more than being depressed or sad.
It's about having no options, this is as good as it gets and it's horrible, others are better off without me, I'm doing people a favor by non existence, I won't be missed, it'll hurt others but they'll move on and be better off...
Some do it because they think that others will be better off.
In their minds, it's not selfish but a harsh selflessness that leads them to do it.
Of course it's not how others feel but they don't know that.

Where I live, it's common to see these flower memorials where someone has been killed in a auto accident.
They're all over the place and people maintain them for years.
I've frequently wondered if they paid that much attention to the person when they were alive?
It's easy to do in an absence.
This conversation, is suicide selfish, comes up when there is a high profile suicide or a close suicide to us.
This conversation, after the fact, is no different than the street memorials all over the place.
We hurt and want to do something to soothe our loss. Sometimes, we get to lay flowers at the site of the accident and maintain it, other times we question and judge out of pain and frustration.
Maybe we do this out of guilt? a little feeling of I should've/could've done more when they were alive so I'll do this so that I don't feel as bad?
"They left me behind. They were selfish!"
Maybe if we extended ourselves a little more, paid attention, a little more, been a little less selfish with our time, maybe they wouldn't have been selfish by ending their time?
Maybe they wouldn't have reached the point where they felt that they were doing us a favor by leaving us?

Skyes now has a hostile work environment case.

No she doesn't. There's only a requirement of the employer to address the situation if it is brought to their attention from another enployee. There is no legal requirement for them to fire her. They only legally have to prevent it from occurring after it has been brought to their attention.

Unless this isnt the first time. We dont know if there have been other instances that have been brought to their attention.
Also, perhaps it varies from state to state, but in CA, an employee can bring up hostile work environment charges because of an incident off the clock away from work.
Example- 2 employees go to a restaurant, not together mind you, but in separate groups. In other words one employee shows up with her friends and the other employee shows up with his friends. The female employee overheard the male employee telling sexist jokes. At work the female employee talks to HR about the incident. It happened off the clock and she wasnt in the group but she felt uncomfortable at work because of it.
He was talked to.
He felt that it was none of her business and he could do whatever he wanted off the clock. Hes right in my opinion. But the legal ramifications were too risky and the male employee was transferred to a different location.
In this case, Wanda doesnt have to be the one that could sue, if Barr has said other things in ear shot of other employees before this.
Even if this was the first time and no one other than Wanda was offended, the risk is too high.
Money and/or the potential of losing it talks.
If Barr had a legal leg to stand on, shed be standing on it. So far, shes not.
She and her show are done.
She was a fool for thinking she could say something like that and nothing would happen.
Even idiots know that we live in the world of digital mob action.
Apparently, the idiots didnt send her the memo.
Think what you want, say it- take a chance, post it- Bye Felicia.

Rosanne tweets and Wanda Sykes quits because of it.
If ABC didnt fire Rosanne, Skyes now has a hostile work environment case.
In other words, a person doesnt have to say or do anything overtly racist. A person can just be offended and feel unwelcome at their place of employment.
Its common knowledge.
If Sykes or Sikes doesnt sue, anyone offended can because the employer did nothing to resolve the situation.
She had to go, legally, and its her own fault for being stupid.
She brought this on herself.
The rest of the cast will be fine. They are fine.
They all have more money than most of us will make in a lifetime.
Dont work with stupid people and you wont be caught up in their stupid prizes.

You know, if the posters here actually cared in their heart of hearts that another school is being shot up and kids may die, they wouldnt be posting such sarcastic and crass responses to such a tragedy. But hey, all they really care about is making the other side look bad and fill that egoist desire in them more than actually caring about a tragedy, so I guess they should just carry on.

The point is that this shit has become so routine that we're arguing the same points over and over again with nothing getting done.

Yep. Sarcasm at inactivity and unwillingness to do anything.
Some might disagree with it, but it is a form of protest. Ill give it the same amount of effort as you.
In order for there to be an attempt at making a side look bad, I would have to be on A side.
Im not.
I dont have to make any side look bad.
Theyre all doing that on their own.

Might be easier to guess the next state until we get this thing going on a daily basis.
Im going to say Texas, Florida or Arizona will be the next one.

If I have to guess a city then Im going to go with a Houston suburb.

Damn, Texas again? What u got against Texas? @bshwalker

Nothin.
Just a big state with a high population of people that luv their guns.
Add all those together and the math worked itself out that way.

instead of mocking a tragedy

Not mocking the tragedy. Mocking the stock response from those in power.

Yup. Posting helpful answers and ideas have gotten us to this point and look at where we are.
TaPs is making fun of the people that have the ability to do something but do nothing.
These events mean nothing to them.
Their words mean nothing to me.
Funny how they get more upset with people making fun of their empty words than the violence thats the source of their empty words.
Not referring to anyone on this board...
...unless they think TaPs actually means something.

My personal, opinion;
It's not the brain that needs to be looked at as much as upbringing and culture and their effect on the brain.
If an honest evaluation was made on these two things, with no political or moral agenda involved, I would venture to guess that it has a lot to do with the culture and the demands/priorities of it.
If that is the case, and honest evaluation will never be made because it would require and adjustment of culture and the priorities of it.
The culture is all about money, and those that benefit from it, will not be fond of that change.
So everything will stay as it is.
