I love Chick Tracts.

http://www.chick.com/catalog/tractlist.asp

They have most of them up for free here. I don't understand how they've never been memed. All the illustrations of angry faces and huge caption boxes could make for some great meme templates.

They haven't been memed because most people haven't heard of them. In the early 90s I say some popart parodies, which I guess you could call a prehistoric meme.....

he sounds racist to asians I think

Probably only because the character (and the woman she was based on if that story is true) is Buddhist, and Chick believed that anyone who is not Protestant Christian or Jewish is going to Hell.

It wouldn't surprise me if he had racist views but I can't remember anything explicit - even by 1970s standards.

I recall him making a point that the idea of people evolving from monkeys was racist to Black people.

Then again, he also had the "Adapted for Black audiences" tracts, which were literal rehashes of existing tracts but with all of the characters Black instead (as if Black people wouldn't get the message otherwise), so...

LMFAO! I feel cheated. I'm Black & didn't get my "Adapted for Black Audiences" copies!

Seriously though I can't recall any overt racist stuff. In retrospect, one of the things I remember that pissed me off, in addition to the comments I made above was Chick was into predestination, i.e. people are either born to go to heaven or hell (don't think he was a purgatory guy). Of course Chick and his fellow travellers are those chosen by God to go to heaven. I suppose that all religions can be patronizing in some sense but it always rubbed me the wrong way that Chick and his supporters believed that most people are essentially damned at birth.

Sort of both. They originally set out to parody it but decided that was impossible, so they ended up faithfully adapting it because it was already more than ridiculous enough.

Exactly, by playing it 100% straight the film is even funnier than if they had tried to do a parody.

JonTron points out that they even used the same font as Marcie's suicide note

Huh, now I'm interested in seeing the flick, just for shits & giggles.

I read that Benny Hill has largely been disowned by many people in the UK. They think his show was awful and they are embarrassed by the fact that it helped define British comedy and that it was broadcast all over the world.

I've met a lot of English people and in my experience this is true. They're really dismissive of the show - so don't bring it up casually or as an icebreaker. Most are pretty dismissive and see it as pretty lowbrow....

Do you think BBC news goes deeper into subjects than other news?

I think they cover a broader range of subjects, and cover more areas of the world than U.S. news. Depth? I have to think about that.....

@spanky1 Assuming the question was directed at me

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I think US (televison) news has gotten too far into op-ed and also "human interest" stories. IMO that's why we get networks that are seen as "left" or "right". Critics will say the BBC has an angle too but who doesn't? I think the BBC's global focus minimizes the op-ed & human interst stuff. My 2 cents.

Just tell me WTF is going on, where & when it happened. I'll figure out the rest. That's what I want from TV news.

He and his supporters went absolutely apeshit over Dungeons & Dragons ("witchcraft")

Someone adapted that tract into a movie, too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Dungeons_(film)

Interesting stuff. Anyway, none of us took it too seriously. I actually tried D&D because it was supposed to be bad. Played it through junior high.

Chick comics had two superheroes called "The Crusaders" a Black & a White guy that used to solve mysteries in the process "saving" characters.

There was a story I read somewhere of one tract that had a guy with a foreign (Asian, I think she was Buddhist) wife and the wife led the husband from God and the guy went to Hell. Supposedly this was based on one of Chicks relatives who was dating an Asian woman.

he sounds racist to asians I think

It's weird because the reputation of the guy is that he was a recluse. I grew up in L.A. and Chick's operation is on the outskirts of LA County. He never did interviews or public appearances so the only insight on his views is what you can get from what he put into his comics. It wouldn't surprise me if he had racist views but I can't remember anything explicit - even by 1970s standards.

All I can say is the stuff in his comics was reactionary, preachy, deterministic and sometimes weird. The people that were really into him when I was growing up were either that way too or they were in families that were that way.

His stuff doesn't seem as widespread or influential as it was in the '70s when I was coming up.

Well chick was so old, even in the '70s that movies were like the internet to him.

I'm older than most on this board, I think. I went to a Christian elementary school in the mid-'70s and they freely gave out those Chick comics, both the little ones and the regular sized ones. We were encouraged to put them on busses, on magazine stands, etc.

I used to put them on top of my regular comics at home - not to hide my regular comics (my parents didn't care) but to "look" like I was a good kid in case I got caught for something.

Looking back at some of the preachy, determinist themes in the comics it's concerning now but as a kid -for me at least- not too much sunk in. The guy had some weird views though.

He and his supporters went absolutely apeshit over Dungeons & Dragons ("witchcraft") Star Wars ("the Force is a euphemism for Satan") and other stuff. It's funny how paranoid some people can get.

It was an earlier version of the Pizzagate, Qanon and other conspiracy shit we have today.

"Jihad" seems a bit... weird. I don't see the problem with "Atilla", unless that also has a meaning beyond just "some bad historic guy was called that"?

Well I met these people overseas (never a soldier but worked for the US gov't). Jihad was Saudi and one Attila was from Mongolia I think, the other Attila was from Kazachstan. I was told Jihad (roughly: "struggle") is common on the Arabian peninsula (Saudi, Yemen, Oman) and other places especially among conservative Muslims.

IIRC "Muhammad" is the most common name in the world.

It does seem weird at first but it's all relative. Think of the name "Dolores" which means "suffering" (roughly). That's weird until you learn tradition says it's inspired by the suffering of Mary seeing Jesus on the cross.

Most Americans don't think anything about the meaning of the name, just the sound. I know I didn't until lots of international travel. Other cultures really think more about the meaning.
