bobbaaay 03/09/21 6:34:38 PM #179 | I literally had conversations with my coworkers who aren't even that interested in film about wanting to go see Uncut Gems and Hereditary when they both came out. Like they were that well known and shown at that many theaters. |

Wouldn't what he's saying be the literal opposite of gatekeeping? He's literally saying that these films had wide releases in mainstream theaters. Which they did. I live in the Detroit area now, and I'm originally from Cleveland; the former barely has 1 million residents, and the latter doesn't even have half a million residents. Both cities definitely showed Hereditary, The Lighthouse, It Follows, Uncut Gems, Green Room, etc. at the big theaters alongside whatever new comic book movie or Dreamworks film just came out. |

bobbaaay 03/09/21 5:38:41 PM #175 | And I mentioned The Lighthouse because it's a film that's not a conventional narrative, and would've definitely been too unconventional to have had a wide release a few decades ago. |

bobbaaay 03/09/21 5:36:59 PM #174 | Zithers posted... have never seen any of those at an amc. the numbers certainly don't make it seem like they get a lot of play. isn't a24's largest grosser lady bird with 33m or something? then parasite got a boost since neon pumped a ton of money into its campaign and marketing to the point of it getting an oscar win. again - all of this stuff with movies being popular has less to do with quality and more with marketing. big reminder to everyone reading this that popular movies only achieve that status through advertising!!! I mentioned different genres because it's pretty apparent that your idea of what constitutes art is a very important topic when discussing this. It's ironic that you're calling HIM a boot-licker, when you're suggesting that films that landed 7 digit figures and had wide releases in mainstream theaters weren't successful "enough." |

bobbaaay 03/09/21 3:33:14 AM #16 | The Lure (2015) - horror musical that's like a modern day, sleazy version of the Little Mermaid, set in a strip club in Poland. Der Fan (1982) - German film about a young teenage girl obsessed with a new wave artist Amityville: It's About Time (1992) - probably the only good Amityville movie aside from Amityville 2. it bleeds nineties. Satan's Little Helper (2004) - fun little movie about a little boy (played by the Christian boy in Palindromes) who helps a serial killer he meets that he thinks is the character from a videogame he plays. Pet Sematary 2 (1992) - kind of sleazy and fun. nothing like an awful King adaptation like its namesake suggests. |

bobbaaay 03/08/21 10:23:31 PM #16 | modena posted... Do you like Mexican food? I can't say whether what I've actually had is authentic or not, but I do like both Tex-Mex and typical taqueria foods. My favorite taqueria foods are just fish tacos, green chile tamales, and horchata. When I go to a Tex-Mex place I typically get some fat-ass wet burrito thing -- usually like a fajita burrito, or like a "spicy" burrito if that's on their menu. Occasionally I'll get this one vegetarian dish with cactus leaves in it at one Tex-Mex place near me. My favorite ingredients? I'm not super adventurous as far as meats go -- so no tripa or langua or anything like that for me. I guess I really just like soft-shell corn tortillas, lots of spicy salsa roja, lots of cilantro (obviously), and squeezing the fresh lime over everything. When my girlfriend and I make homemade enchiladas or tacos we use lots of serrano peppers (she's half-Indian - so we basically substitute most hot peppers with serrano), canned hot hatch peppers, chihuahua cheese, and lime zest. When I make chili I'll use a lot of dried chile d'Arbol. Confidence: B+ |

bobbaaay 03/08/21 10:11:35 PM #13 | Veggeta X posted... Do you think this websight has too many Dems or too many Repubs? I would've said too many libertarians and Republicans years and years ago. I do think a lot of the same classism/fat shaming/red pillery still exists here -- but for the most part the website seems to have swayed more into the corny, "I'm not a liberal, I'm a leftists" territory. Lots of people defending digital vigilantism in my posts I've made against it in recent years. Lots of us vs. them rhetoric and echo chambering. So I guess I'd say neither per se, but I think in general it's shifted to a little more left leaning than before. At least I don't see as much right wing stuff as I used to like 6+ years ago. bobbaaay 03/08/21 10:06:28 PM #9 | Heartomaton posted... What are your thoughts about turtles? When I was a kid I was a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The first film was one of the first movies I watched in a theater. When I was going into kindergarten I was interviewed, and they asked me my favorite show and I started screaming "TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES" until they had to remove me. Then years later when Ebay came out, my parents' first Ebay name was turtlehouse -- because my dad always dreamt of buying a tortoise and keeping it as a pet. We never did, though. Otherwise I don't really think about turtles too much. I've never seen one up close (excluding the zoo), and I've never touched one. I guess they're okay. I don't like them, and I don't dislike them. My history with this board is that I've been coming here for like 10+ years. Way back when I was a regular for many years. Maybe about 3 or 4 years ago lots of users were harassing me to the point that I'd regularly get myself banned, and go on a hiatus for a few months. The last 3 or 4 times I've been back I've made topics like this, because I think it could be fun -- depending. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. I'm sure other users have done similar topics, but adding the degree of confidence was my own flair. Confidence: n/a |

bobbaaay 03/08/21 9:25:18 PM #7 | ROOTFayth posted... well music helps a lot to enhance the experience of a video game, naturally when the OST is garbage its going to diminish the experience I played the game for at least 30+ hours without even noticing the OST being "bad" - let alone "garbage." Is it Tactics Ogre? No. Is it Earthbound? No. Is it Castlevania Symphony of the Night? No. But it's not so bad that it actually detracted from me having fun. |

bobbaaay 03/08/21 8:07:37 PM #145 | https://youtu.be/v5DqmTtCPiQ Im not comparing superhero films to modern art - but the concepts in this video definitely apply. The people arguing on Scorsese's side are using a concept of film and its merits that reaffirm the popular values and ideals. This is the exact same reason conventional critics have been historically hyper-critical of horror and its subgenres - because it's a subversive genre that operates within a different set of criteria. Something like the Guinea Pig films would never be praised by popular conventional film critics because they fear praise will align them with condoning the subject matter, and because the narratives are looser, more fantastical - or in the case of Japanese gore and pinku films, non-existent. In regards to music - this is the same basis for people bashing any number of genres. Whether it be pop music (which certainly requires talent) due to the expected goal of commercial profit, rap music due to a lack of physical instrumentation, or any number of genres for harsher vocals that go against conventional vocal teaching. All of these exist within different criteria. Rap can be about lyricism and wit -- or building an aesthetic. Pop can be about financial gain, sure - but it's mostly about using catchy song structures or the packaging and presentation of styles and aesthetics. Punk subgenres can be about the community that's built, DIY ethics, political agendas. Metal can be about the detailed instrumentation or creating a song that's able to cause a cathartic release of aggression. None of them operate within the same exact criteria, and each builds its own mythos. The pretention of the people like Scorsese defenders is just some false intellectual stance built on artistic fascism. It fails to acknowledge the medium and its different goals. Art criticism should be about intent, attention to detail, layering of themes or motifs, and effort (to a degree). I don't watch comic book movies, or really action films for that matter -- but those films could easily hit their own marks they set. They could be faithful adaptations to the source material. They could be meticulously planned -- even if the end goal is profit. They're still cinema - they're just not the kind of cinema you like. As far as the streaming thing and theater-going hurting -- A24 doesn't seem to be struggling to have wide releases of films like The Lighthouse, which would've been far too weird and unconventional 15-20 years ago for a wide release. Plenty of films, like Saulnier's first two, were funded through Kickstarter -- which ended up netting him enough traction for Green Room to be green lit. People have been making SOV films for decades. Films like Kids and other Korine films had very low budgets and wound up being immensely culturally relevant -- they even used to show Kids in health classes. Filesharing is also finally catching up to film enough to hurt it commercially. Music is cheaper to produce and adapted accordingly over a decade ago. It just sounds like Scorsese wants big budget blockbusters for himself and is upset he's not as desired by general audiences to still get them. His defenders really are just old men shouting at the clouds, and probably have some very boring and predictable opinions on film. |
