blu 02/22/20 10:05:04 PM #93 | Bernie is really just running on giving away free stuff. Hes as much of a caricature as trump is. his final answer in the Nevada debate shows that he is still a corrupt politician. Not wanting to follow process to gain an unfair advantage, trying to manipulate the people to see the process as rigged if he doesnt get nominated. |

Topic | My girlfriend doesn't know her times tables or see the point of them. |
blu 02/17/20 7:05:28 AM #54 | She can do basic ones like 6x10, but she doesnt have the grid from 1x1 to 10x10 down without using a calculator for something like 6x7 or 9x4. which isnt an exaggeration to say you dont know your times tables, which should be values anyone can say within a second or two. For 13% Id estimate just do n/10 then add about a third of that. Or get my phone out if I need to be exact or confident. |

The way you talk about it sounds like bragging. Even if you don't see it. Which is why people always tell you you're bragging. Even now, it sounds like bragging... The trade offs just werent really worth it to take the position I wouldve liked more. Very Similar work as Im very specialized, but better atmosphere. I do know a couple single 28ish year olds, just not many. Its probably geographic and social-circle related. |

I split expenses with my SO (me paying 2/3 of them and her 1/3) so I spend about 20-25k annually. I do some credit card churning to get some more (two cards right now will get you 2kish in free flights plus bring a buddy for free). Its very unlikely I dont get that initial 30% raise I mentioned, Ill get the other eventually but maybe have to switch offices if I want it. Theres also possibly one more but that one depends on my dedication to finding where would offer that much. |

blu 02/16/20 5:11:27 PM #23 | LinkPizza posted... Things do indeed happen. But with blu, Idk. It's either something he made up, or stealth bragging, or both... Well, it normally seems to be, at least... Having a girlfriend isnt bragging to me. Like I dont know many people who are single and 28. Idk, like I dont have a lot going on in life other than having been working on a career I dislike and dating/relationship, so its what I talk about. I got big into personal finances for a year so talked about money more than the board cares for. Im gaining some fat working in an office so Ill hopefully talk about fitness soon. wolfy42 posted... Actually it's an interesting question, should we focus on teaching our children information or methods that they have constant and easy access to with the internet/phones etc? Mental back of the hand calculations are huge in my every day life. My friends comment they find it weird how I calculate everything, but I find knowing relative quantities to put things in perspective as incredibly useful. |

If I dont get brave enough for RE (really just for leverage) or to start my own business, I should be able to have 1.5MM in there by 40 and live off the interest with my current pay rate. More if I get a raise (and a 30% raise once or twice is pretty likely). 4% SWR is the advice for a 30 year retirement, but really Id aim for 2% because Id feel safer and Id want it to grow for medical and retirement home stuff in retirement, |
Topic | I still can't believe I went to NYC. Where can I go next? |
blu 02/16/20 12:13:36 PM #25 | FatalAccident posted... Still feels so surreal, somewhere Id only ever seen in movies for the past 20 something years. And then going there, and its exactly like you see in the movies with steam coming out of the ground and hot dog stands and news stands round every corner and shit. I had my first trip to NYC in December. Hotel on Times Square across from the Hamilton theater. I was pretty unimpressed. It felt like a giant outdoor shopping mall. But I was surprised how it was exactly like what you see in the movies. I think if I hadnt seen it in the movies so much it would have been a different experience. But I feel a lot of travel will be kinda dull for me because I know what to expect. I need to find out another way to travel or somewhere else to go maybe, more adventure type locations. |

blu 02/05/20 4:50:15 PM #1 | I feel so bad, I came home from work today (luckily I left early for an appointment, was only at work 8 hours) and found my cat in the refrigerator. He must've jumped in while I was closing and and I didn't notice. I am worried he might have brain damage. He acts all normal, he seemed a little groggy when I opened it up but it went away in like 20 seconds. Not sure if it was because he was asleep or the light, I hope the little guy didn't have any oxygen issues :( |

blu 02/01/20 9:54:27 PM #1 | https://www.decisionproblem.com/paperclips/ Takes a couple of hours to reach the end. Cool story though. I also am really enjoying kittens game. It's a bit more traditional than universal paperclips in terms of not really having an end or a big story, but there's just so much going on it doesn't get boring. It's not just more of the same thing with a different name, but the game strategy is constantly changing. |

It's all he does lol Grad school -> residency -> job and getting together with my current gf and dating my previous gf have basically been my entire life for the past five years. Before that I focused on doing great at school and coming out debt free. Being a professional in a competitive field blows. I'd much rather have been with people who cared about having a life, but instead I'm with people who view you as ****** person for not wanting to work 60h every week (or 80h 'when I was your age'). I used to post a lot more about books and video games and interesting topics in high school, but that hasnt been my life recently. JOExHIGASHI posted... Go for PhD Statistically people reach a plateau of happiness after 100k so more money won't make you happier than your are now. I'm somewhat frugal, basically anything over 25k goes into an early retirement fund. It I was just spending the money it would be an easy decision. Assuming 50k spending each year (because I want to overdo my calculation), $1,250,000 basically will cover me for the rest of my life with the interest. I would enjoy the process of the PhD and having the more laid back position. Blighboy posted... I spend about 25k and funnel the rest into index funds. The difference isn't necessarily about what I spend each year, but for when I get to 'retire'. Assuming 50k spending each year (because I want to overdo my calculation), $1,250,000 basically will cover me for the rest of my life with the interest. If I had to work until 60-65 Id have another job within a year, early retirement complicates it for me. Sarcasthma posted... Do you think blu and Ohhja race their yachts? Its been a while. blu 01/28/20 6:33:04 AM #1 | time PhD there. Full time work plus part time PhD. I loved my time there, and dislike my current workplace. right now Im making 140k likely to go up to 180k within two years. I could possibly swing for 220k-260k doing Locum assignments if I wanted to live in hotel (and Id work less). Really tough life decision here. Ive always dreamed of a PhD, but also of financial independence at a young age. A PhD in my field isnt specifically worthwhile or my first choice of fields, but its commonplace and a childhood dream and would be somewhat interesting and open up careers in science writing or university teaching. |

blu 01/28/20 6:01:23 AM #7 | WastelandCowboy posted... Look at OP flexing his money spending. Soo cool! I want to be just like him. That's why I let you know what cards have the bonuses. This is a free $2200, basically. $4400ish after counting my gfs free flights. Pre-tax that would be $6600ish. Anyone here could do it, even if you have to put rent on a credit card (and pay the convenience fee) you come out ahead. pedro45 posted... So you were rewarded for spending a ton of money? I was more rewarded for signing up for the cards than for the money spending. One card is 5k within three months and one card is 5k within six months, which both are pretty reasonable considering you can buy gift cards for groceries and amazon and such. Especially for college students, whose universities may allow you to pay for tuition, dorm, and books with a credit card. Yes, I've never paid interest on a credit card in my life. |

blu 01/11/20 10:24:18 AM #1 | idk man, I like hanging out with my girlfriend. She's really nice and understanding, we've been living with each other for a year now. She's just bad with money and lazy and messy. Blames it on depression, doesn't go exercise or see a therapist. Doesn't care about anything other than social media and has no hobbies or interests outside of watching sitcoms. No interest in travel other than to Disney World. The few things she does like seems to be things her parents decided on and were parts of her childhood. Makes decisions she knows is bad, lets them snowball. Will spend 11-12 hours in bed on the weekend. She's super nice and supportive. I initially thought we had a lot in common, but her personality is to just morph and make everyone around her happy. I mentioned it and she said she just wants to make everyone around her happy, and it's fine to just agree with them about everything because that's what makes people happy. It's like she has no autonomy and is purely reactive. |

blu 01/03/20 8:37:43 PM #1 | https://imgur.com/a/wLASTsW I'm pretty annoyed by that. Obviously abusing the return "item not as described" feature. Called eBay. Said if I didn't return it then they would force the return, I wouldn't have to get the item back, I'd still be charged seller fees, and I'd get a ding on my account. eBay said to offer free returns and then buyers will be more honest and you might be able to have them pay for shipping. |
