I remember how surreal it seemed when I heard about it ending that shit like that was still around. It sounded like something that should have been gone by the 1950s, and instead it was still around in the fucking 1990s.

Negotiations to end Apartheid started in 1989, so a lot of Apartheid restrictions were lifted during that time. In 1994 it ended. That's roughly 20 years. It took Germany only 10 years to recover after being decimated in WW2.
