Either Democrats or Republicans would need to splinter off a large chunk their voter base into this third party thats either a left leaning or right leaning alternative, which means the party that doesnt do that can hold firm and clean up in every election with their numbers intact. The only way it could really happen is if this third party does somehow appeal to both sides and siphon voters from both, but a centrist party would inevitably get criticisms of bah youre just a fence sitter who wont get anything done! since nowadays it seems like if youre not all the way left or right, youre the enemy. The other question would be which aspects of the left or right do they inherit?
