I'll see if I can't explain it clearer.

The difference between gaslighting and "regular lying" is that most of the time when people lie, they have some kind of a fake story or statement and they're trying to make people believe it. With gaslighting, you don't even need the person to believe most of what you're saying. The goal is to make it so they don't know if you're telling the truth or not. So for example when people lie usually they have a story and they try to stick to it as much as possible so it's believable. Whereas someone who is gaslighting will intentionally change the story, and then act like they said the same thing before.

Saying it's trying to make people "question reality" may be an exaggeration. I think a better way to put it is that gaslighting tries to make you question your own memory. Someone who is gaslighting will tell lies about little things that serve no purpose, such as the literal gas light example in the movie. Why would someone lie about the light being dimmer? It doesn't make any sense.

It can be extremely disorienting when someone you love and trust is doing it to you, because you assume they're acting in good faith and want to give them the benefit of the doubt. So you'll think that maybe you misremembered, or maybe they misremembered and you don't want to make a big deal about it. Even when you do catch on, there's almost no effective way to deal with it because how do you know if they're lying again or you're misremembering? Because of course it always is possible that you misremember. Especially when they do it with mundane little details that we don't remember anyway. Or maybe they'll say something that is true, but in a way that sounds like they're lying. So every time you talk to the person you don't know what is true or not. Being in a relationship with a person can really affect your own confidence in memory with other people and, indeed, your grip on reality if it goes far enough. Like parents doing it to their children.

Some examples:

-An abusive husband telling his wife that he hit her first, or that she started it. This is insidious because in real life, abuse often escalates and involves the other spouse getting mad, making it easy to make her feel like it was a "same thing both sides" situation even though he always does more to escalate, and always is always the one injuring and intimidating her.

-A child catches her mother doing drugs, then quickly hides it and says get out of the room. The kid is shy about bringing it up but weeks later confronts her, and she gets all indignant like she would never do such a thing, why would you even accuse her of such lies?

-A man grooms then sexually abuses a child, then later tells the child things like "Hey, you started kissing me!" and makes the child think they initiated everything.

-A real estate mogul hires contractors to make his building and tells them he will pay one price, but then when it comes time for a final, written contract, he gives them a much lower figure and pretends he had been saying that from the start.

-A presidential candidate spends years accusing the president of being born outside the United States and faking his own birth certificate. He constantly says this, everyone remembers it, hundreds of quotes of him saying this are still floating around the internet, and in fact RILING PEOPLE UP BY SAYING THIS IS HOW HE BECAME POPULAR IN THE FIRST PLACE. Then, out of the blue, he calls a press conference where he says "I believe the president is a citizen born in the united states, and in fact this whole rumor was started by my opponent" even though she never said anything of the kind.

You may have noticed the last two refer to someone specific.

This whole topic is a big strawman. Hardly anyone ever says you can't be both a theist and a good scientist.

What people have a problem with is when you try to change science based on your religious beliefs. Or you try to push them as science. Like people who say creationism should be taught in science class. That's bullshit because it has no scientific basis. There is no body of work showing how natural history and biology work from a creationist perspective. All they ever do is take existing science, and then try to pick apart and discredit anything that goes against their creationist beliefs.

Creationism--especially old earth creationism--is incompatible with science because it is based on disbelieving and discrediting established science. That doesn't mean you can't be both religious and a scientist. The universe goes well beyond what we can understand, and if you see those things in religious or spiritual terms, there's not necessarily anything wrong with that.

It's only when you refuse to believe what is verifiable and testable based on those beliefs that it interferes with you being a good scientist.

There is nothing wrong with believing in some sort of divine being as long as you don't let that belief affect what you believe in the realm of science. Like if you believe that God exists outside everything we understand about the universe, but that your job as a scientist is to study the world as we can observe and test it. Your religion affects your beliefs in philosophy and morality but not the natural world or science.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a scientist like that.

However too frequently Christians think they should be able to take what they believe based on their gut and the bible and have it get the same level of credence as the large body of knowledge that science has built. Often they think their criticisms and doubts based on a very superficial knowledge of evolution should be enough to topple something that millions of people have devoted their lives to studying and building.

They are wrong, and so is the TC of course.

I'm not a big fan of the two kids being his "friends." Part of the point of the original was the bleakness--NO humans understand them, and damn few of the animals even do. Everyone is cruel to Dumbo, all he has is one puny little mouse for a friend.
