Because conservative policies have sure done a lot for the black community.

NYC got way better for black people under Giuliani. The black murder rate went WAY down.

Now go head and look at the state of affairs in any Democrat city with a high black population. How are they doing?

Compared to the early 90s? They have a much lower crime and murder rate, just like pretty much the whole country, across the board, had a big decrease in crime in the late 90s. It wasn't just Giuliani--all the cities with Democrat mayors saw their crime go down too.

It's tempting to go high risk every time but you'll probably never win if you do that.

I wish they'd stop with this trash franchise. Pixar in general has slowly been getting worse.

Finding Dory was good and Inside out was great

Finding Dory was disappointing. The parts with Dory and her parents were great but the rest of the movie kind of dragged.

Especially at the end, when we have this wonderful, beautiful moment where Dory reunites with her parents. I totally cried. It was a perfect emotional climax to the movie.

...but after that we have to sit through a ridiculous, anticlimactic action set piece that goes way too long.

Inside Out is great though. I think it may be Pixar's best movie yet.

FOX makes a shitload of money mostly off syndication, streaming and merchandising rights. The value of the show won't decrease if it's still on the air.

This is the reason. Broadcast TV ads just don't pull in the money they used to so shows that pull in revenue from other sources are much more valuable. Having new episodes coming out makes the show feel more "alive" and relevant even if people aren't watching it.

So poor guy getting tied up and then learns this girl has a serious painful sounding fetish and then while he yells no she jams the back end of pen into his urethra inches in and inches out over and over. After a few hours he passes out and she unties him.

Jobs that require trade school but no university exist but they are the first ones to get outsourced to cheap foreign labor and automation. Not only that, but those jobs are becoming more integrated with technology meaning that having some kind of degree in a related field (like engineering, science, or programming) will open up more options and get you a better salary.

Jobs which do not require a bachelors degree have been steadily decreasing, and salary has been going down. I see no reason to think this will change in the future. Even if you go into a trade, having a bachelors degree will make you less likely to be laid off, more likely to find a better job quickly if you do get laid off, and better paid in whatever job you find.

And in general, the blue collar sector is shrinking relative to white collar jobs, in which college education is essential, and industries like health care and education, which also need college degrees to make good money.

It is very important for the USA to make it easier for young people to get a college education without running up huge debts.

Spelunky.

For a traditional roguelike my favorite might actually be Rogue. That game is so tight, balanced, and basically perfect. Or Nethack, which I love just for being a crazy jumble of stuff to explore.

I don't like the term "roguelite." I consider any game with a significant amount of procedurally generated content and permanent, irreversible consequences for actions that significantly affect your playthrough--including but not limited to permadeath--to be a roguelike. Or at least to be have roguelike elements.

Things like ascii graphics, turn-based tactical movement and combat, a big epic quest you're embarking on, etc. I consider elements of a "traditional" roguelike. I don't consider games that don't have these things to be any less a roguelike. Just less traditional.

Doing the same thing and getting different results happens all the time. In fact the scientific method is basically doing the same thing over and over again with the expectation that, sometimes, you will get different results.

Also if you look at any kinds of books or research on mental illness and its definitions, you will definitely NOT find "doing the same thing and expecting different results." That is not even close to being the "definition."

I mean I know there are lots of things people say all the time that are completel bullshit but this one in particular should be obvious after just a few seconds of thought.

If people said "the definition of desperation is doing the same thing and expecting different results" that would be closer to the truth at least.

at what point does the needs of those in your country, matter? as i said before what's the ratio

Uh, whatever the ratio is in real life... you're acting like it's this big mystery which no one will explain when people are quite clear about it. They'll usually say something like "10% of the population is black but only 2% of leading actors are black" or else they'll point out that a certain demographic is almost nonexistent in spite of being very numerous in real life. Like the huge lack of gay people in anything other but small side roles until a decade or two ago, or the Oscars choosing NO black people for any major nominations, or how even the background characters in the sitcom Friends were almost all white people even though it took place in New York City. Are you just pretending you don't know?

Japan is something like 1% foreigners and that probably reflects their representation on TV. And when foreigners are in Japanese media, the vast majority tend to be white people from America or Europe, so if anything whites are overrepresented. If anyone feels underrepresented it's Koreans and Chinese, who are almost nonexistent in Japanese TV and movies in spite of being much more numerous that whites.

07/15/17 7:43:14 PM

The theatrical cuts have better pacing and make for a tighter viewing experience. Even Jackson himself thinks so--he made the cuts himself and those were the reasons he gave. I mean for me, while the theatrical cuts are long the never feel long, at all. The extended editions kind of do. Even though I like them, for the most part, if I go back and watch I prefer the theatrical cut.

The extended cuts give nice background info and add extra dimensions that add to the movie. But I think the movies are better, as movies, in the theatrical version. And of course the novels to make the characters more fleshed out and give intereresting details. All of the scenes they chose to cut, I pretty much agree with, or at least see the reasoning behind them. I mean the Saruman scene at the beginning of the third movie is fantastic but it means we're waiting a LONG time for the main part of the story to kick in.

I think you can summarize Boromir just fine based on the theatrical cut. He is a brave warrior, experienced fighting the forces of Mordor for his people and he clearly has a deep love for them. But he also is arrogant and condescending to other people. The One Ring clearly uses both this arrogance and his love of his people to corrupt him and make him downright monstrous, but the final scene with Aragorn shows us that we are not seeing him the way he usually is and that he is, at heart, a good man in normal situations. The extended edition adds a few extra layers but we understand his core character just fine without them.

Personally I would recommend the theatrical cut to a first time viewer, and the extended edition if you want to see it again. I think this would give most people a better experience overall.

I do believe that eventually we will have to abandon capitalism but not for the reasons the TC states. I don't know how long it will take--maybe 100 years, maybe 500 years--but eventually we will have to go to some kind of socialist society, for two reasons:

1. Automation will gradually make more and more human labor obsolete. This means that fewer and fewer people will be able to have jobs that have any monetary value to society and incentive for companies to hire people will go way down. Eventually just having people's basic needs taken care of whether they work or not will be a necessity.

2. Capitalism is based on growth. Changing from agrarian economy to a more industrial one created huge growth in western nations, and it has caused huge growth in other countries when they went through the same transformation. However this is finite, and while technology creates new opportunities for growth (for example information and cell phone technology) these are much smaller and very sporadic. Long term they cannot create enough stable growth to keep world capitalist economies healthy unless we find some sort of huge leap like space travel, which is hardly something we can rely on. Growth will never stop but we will see more and more diminishing returns meaning that a different economic model is necessary.

#66
Seven years for rape of an underage boy seems ridiculously low. More likely it is something that falls under the umbrella of "sexual assault" but is not really rape, like maybe fondling and rubbing against him. But the source just sees "sexual assault" and translates it to "rape" because they can technically get away with it.

(I still think 7 years is too low but that's typical in a lot of places.)

And they say "had his sentence reduced" when what probably happened is he was granted parole. You know, the same way any criminal has a chance of parole for a crime? Again, 7 years is too low, but having a chance at parole 4 years in is perfectly fair and everyone has a chance for it.

I mean, I don't know the particulars of the case, but I'll bet this source is horribly distorting them to sound as horrible as possible.

Or just outright reporting a made-up rumor.

Uh, debridement is a minor form of surgery. That's not normally part of a checkup. What is the doctor doing that could be considered "debridement"? That could be the reason for the high cost, or it could be fraud. If it's a normal checkup you shouldn't be getting charged for debridement.
