All the games have some areas they excel. DaS3 is the only game outside of DeS and BB that does not have a bunch of repeat boss fights and each area feels very unique enemy wise. Boss fights in DaS3 are very good too.

I wouldn't quite call it a retcon because even if you link the flame in DS1 it's heavily implied that you're only delaying the inevitable. It was always a pyrrhic victory.

Of course it seems like your choices don't matter. They don't. You can't stop the end, only delay it, and Dark Souls 1 makes a compelling case that the more you try to intervene the worst you make it for everyone else.

Yes, in DaS1 you can only delay the inevitable. But in DaS2 it doesn't have that same feeling, because whether you link the flame to continue fire or let it go out, eventually the flame with reignite. I feel like in the DaS1 world there was a possibility there would be a new age after dark, but nothing to suggest it would be fire again. In DaS2 and DaS3 it doesn't matter what you do. You van extend fire a little longer, or just go into an age of dark. Either way the fire will return and repeat the cycle. It's pretty lame.

But yeah she is significantly more difficult if you don't use a status like bleed or frost against her.

My first run was blind. I didn't realize it was the best weapon until after I beat it. I just thought it looked cool and I was tired of the str/fth build I had used up until that point.

I have accepted by this point that I am just unable to fight her one-on-one, but I also can't even summon for the fight, because the ash summons are effectively just free health for her, and player phantoms just lose connection after a couple minutes every time and leave you alone with a boss that has twice the health that she normally does.

I may never be able to defeat Malenia.

I beat her with no summons with Rivers of Blood on my first run. But was unable to beat her with the Ruins Greatsword on my second run.

Uh.... dude, the whole premise of DS1 is that the fire is about to go out. This is the first linking of the flame since Gwynn. That's why Gwynn is there to meet you at the end.

The fire being about to go out and the fire completely extinguishing are not the same thing. The fire has never gone out since it began in DaS1, Gwyn linked it and then you can choose to do the same. If you let it go out it is implied that begins the age of dark (man). There is never any mention of a cycle between light and dark in DaS1. There is never any hint that the age of dark will give way to another age of fire. That was all made up in DaS2 and DaS3. Tbh it is a pretty awful retcon, because it basically means your choice doesn't really matter in any of the games because the cycle will flip back the other way eventually anyways. Linking the fire in DaS1 seems so imperative (if you wish to continue the age of fire) because once it goes out, that's it.

The endless loop between light and dark and the fact that neither ending matters because the loop continues most certainly was added in DaS2. The fire had never gone out before in DaS1, but DaS2 decided "well, it doesn't matter if the fire fades, it will just start up again" as a way to justify both 2 and 3. Neither one of them has any actual narrative reason to exist. You can tell they were both more contractual and money making obligations than passion projects. Doesnt seem like Miyazaki is interested in making sequels to games.

I like it even less than DaS2. At least that game has its own identity. DaS3 is Bloodborne with DaS1 skin modded over it. Even down to how painfully linear and how much it railroads your progression, which wasn't as big a deal in Bloodborne since at its core it is more of an action game than RPG.

Y'all don't seem to get that DS is about death and rebirth. We see echoes of previous worlds bc we're in an endless loop doing the same thing over and over again. Of course there are recurring themes and characters.

Like, just because it's uncomfortable for you doesn't make it weird. He writes things with clear purposes. Like the Bev spying on Bowers and Hoffstetter? That scene is supposed to show how Bowers is an insecure hypocrite, presumably born out of his dad's abuse, and that Hoffstetter is a psychopath. Like there's an clear underlying point being made about the characters. And the only reason to be like "hey, dis is weird" is because you are viewing it in a decidely pornographic way, when that's not the intent at all.

As disturbing as the Bowers scene is, it at least makes sense in regards to the story. A bully sexually abusing another bully is not out of the realm of possibility. A bunch of 11 year olds deciding that a magical gang bang is going to protect them is just so out of left field and inappropriate on every level. You keep mentioning its "coming of age." 11 year olds don't typically come of age through group sex.
