Software updates on a physical disc

If you're not being needlessly pedantic and don't actually know, the physical disk just installs the version 1.0 of the game on your console. Pretty much all games these days have day-one patches that fix bugs. A publisher could technically do a software update for a game that renders it unplayable. You could get around it by disconnecting from the internet and installing the base version, but you wouldn't be able to use any online features.
Again, this isn't going to happen because it would be business suicide, but a publisher theoretically CAN take your physical games away, in a sense.
