#94. Twisted Metal 2 (PS1, 1996)
I am CALYPSO and I thank you for playing Twisted Metal!

I haven't played this game in many years and I feel positive it doesn't hold up at all. As I recall it, I'm pretty sure the controls were really awkward. But I have a lot of memories playing this game at a friend's house on his PS1- This may be the only game on the list I have never owned in some way actually.

Anyway, this game really appealed to the darker kid side of me that I never really had. "Violent" car combat, driving around large actual cities, blowing up other cars with cool weapons, and each car's individual unique special, going to Paris and bombing the Eiffel Tower until it creates a bridge where you can drive on the rooftop. All of it triggered those kid-desired urges. My friend was a year older than me too and I wanted him to think I was cool. I remember writing down all the codes with him to unlock stuff and referencing that a lot. I always liked playing as Warthog, since obviously playing as Minion was cheap.

The main draw was multiplayer obviously, but we played through the main campaign as well a bunch, and tried to get all the endings. And boy, does that game have a sense of humor there. I assumed most of you are familiar with the game, but if not its basically vehicular survial combat. The campaign centers around a magical ... demon man? Named Calypso, running this very contest you are playing in, Twisted Metal, wherethe winner gets any one wish fulfilled by Calypso. Of course each character's winning cutscene involves something about their wish going horribly wrong (usually) and they're a delight to watch if you haven't. I also want to shout out the original Twisted Metal, while its a much less memorable or good game, the cutscenes for that are absolutely unrivaled. Please enjoy its live action... acting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b_-Rgq6nrU

I also find it quite amazing, that even after the series has basically died out, Sweet Tooth has somehow found a way to still make himself relevant as he pops up in other media still, like Playstation All Stars Battle Royale (lol), Rocket League, and was even almost in Mortal Kombat.

Up next: The launch game in a series recently rebooted.

#93*. Cuphead (PC, 2017)
As I said in my hint, this is probably the game with the most visually pleasing aesthetics that I've played, not even just for 2D games. I still find it incredibly impressive how this game looks and how it really does not look like a game at all, even beyond just adding a 1930s-esque filter over the game. The animation in this is beautiful, and all the bosses are not only so expressive and detailed, but are also all imaginative. Everything flows so smoothly. It also being entirely cel/hand drawn to match the style of the 30s just blows my mind too, no wonder this game was in dev for so long.

The game itself is very fun too as a boss-driven schmup with some run n gun stages mixed in. Pretty much every fight is memorable and has neat twists and turns as you progress through each boss's phases. I actually just learned through the GDQ run the other day that some bosses have secret phases orwaysto beat them based on what you do, or don't do. For example, if you don't attack the crying onion from the vegetable stage, he never cries,is happy instead and just leaves on his own, but then there's additional stuff to deal with during the carrot phase.

Playing this game was already hard, but on Expert mode added a solid level of challenge. It made everything just slightly faster and added just enough projectiles to be the right degree of extra challenge, not like turning it into a bullet hell or anything. And if the game were ever a true bullet hell that wouldn't be ideal-there's only one or two points where it really gets like that and they're pretty manageable.

Anyway, my favorite fights, based on the design of the fight and design of the boss itself are Werner Werman, the army mouse who commandeers a soup can, flying bottlecap machine, and eventually is eaten by a cat... who also turns out to be a robot
, Cala Maria, the enchantress Mermaid who gets some electric eel friends and eventually becomes a Medusa
, and Baroness von Bon Bon, who unleashes different candy minibosses on you before attacking you from her sugar castle herself.

Up next: A game with a lot of unique characters and endings, but somehow one of the characters has broken out of the mold of the game and pops up in a few other places, despite the series being pretty much dead I think.

*Note: I think I actually want to swap this game and Cuphead. So I made Cuphead 93, and this game will be 94

#95. Borderlands 2 (PS3, 2012)
I bet you probably expected me to have this higher, but I realized most of my enjoyment of this game came from just playing with you friends than the game itself. The game itself is still fun and a good game, though a little out of the realm of the kind of games I'd usually enjoy. It's got a nice unique art style and an ok brand of humor if not a bit lame attime, and I liked playing it to completion with all you various groups. It probably would not be in my top 100 otherwise, except for the good memories it has created, so here it is! I always feel like I'm not contributing much damage-wise. Maybe I would've liked it more had I not played Zer0 my first time through (that clue btw from before was a haiku, that was your weird hint).

The Tiny Tiny DLC though is super legit and is the best part of that entire series.
Oh, and Grandma Torgue

I leave you with one of its many enjoyable glitches:

Up Next: In my opinion, this is the most aesthetically pleasing game I've ever played. It's a 2D game.

oh hell yeah you know it :)
great deal for our side. Gimenez is gonna be a great player himself, cleveland fans should be excited, he played some phenomenal defense last year, his rookie year. Carrasco also is gonna fly under the radar more, but that's such a huge piece for us, with how badly we need starting pitching still, and he's under 3 years control.
still need to extend Lindor though, and still some other work to do (still don't have a CF)

But yea, incredible day!!! super excited. Hope the MLB season doesn't fuck itself up

#96. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1, 1997)
I don't know what a Metroidvania is or isn't anymore, but I know this is one and it's also not the last one you'll see on my list. I would probably have this game much higher if I played it more inmy youth but I only played it further down the line and I felt like it may have not quite held up well compared to more contemporaries ones- mostly due to the fact that until you start to make some upgrades to Alucard, the momentum feels a little stunted by needing to stopto attack if you're on the ground, or the sword not being long enough to feel really good. I mean sure you get some better weapons later ok. But the sword is what I associate most with Alucard. My issues with the game stop there as this style of game will always be one of the most appealing to me. The mix with RPG elements is a good one, and going around, exploring, noting places to come back later, and then wrecking those enemies when you're much stronger, only to discover new areas is always a great gaming feeling. Obviously you have to love the ridiculous opening sequence (Richter is my favorite Belmont), and the whole "spoiler" 2nd half of the game was unexpected for me, even having played it so many years after it came out. The fact I have it this high despite the fact I think it's not the best aged game I think speaks wonders to it. Also having played it at an older age, some stuff doesn't quite stay in the memory banks as much, except for the feeling of always liking these games.

Also the final boss version of Dracula is rad af

Up next: This game's fun with friends. Solid character options. Not all of them though.

#97. Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? (PC, 1997)
This game apparently got a name change somewhere along the way as "Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time", I suppose to differentiate it from the older NES/PC game.
I loved this game as a kid. It's an edutainment game at its surface, but it's a good ol fashioned point and click adventure at its soul. Though a pretty basic one, but as a big Carmen Sandiego fan as a kid- of both the game shows and most of the other video games too (Where in the USA? and World?)- this one really appealed to me as it got out of the simple genre of "Get geography clue, then go place" to having a little contained thing to solve for your historical figures through time, asking to find out what they need, solving each timeline's little puzzle, and then figuring out where the thief is. I went back and looked at a playthrough of this game, and I can see why it appealed still,so I figure that's worth something. There's an Edison/Lightbulb stage, so that definitely had some biased appeal to me, and it had a lot of Lynne Thigpen, who was great as always as The Chief (RIP). No Rockapella sadly.
Anyway, this was an important game to me as a kid that I played a shit ton, and a lot of the history lessons from it really did stick with me, and the point and click adventure style puzzles you had to "solve" in each area were fun.

For example, Edison needed a spool of thread to finish a light bulb, but the Cotton Store (yeah) didn't want to sell it to you until the morning. So you had to borrow Edison's phonograph, place it outside the shop owner's home window, knock on the shop door to talk to the guard who calls the owner, the owner says "Do NOT give those rascals a spool of thread!", but you've recorded it, so then you go back later to the door with your recording and you have to play various parts of the recording to respond to the guard properly, including cutting off the "Do NOT" part so he just hears "give those rascals a spool of thread!" and that's how you get it. All while learning about the light bulb and Edison!

Anyway, Broderbund was the shit.

#93 - South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS3, 2014)

I haven't watched much South Park in years and only remember a few episodes, but The Stick of Truth is one of the few licensed games that really stick the landing on the humor of the show and bring it into a honestly great turn-based RPG, despite the framerate drops and slowdown on the PS3 version. Beat the game with a Thief the first time through, and then a Jew to get the one trophy and cleanup the collectables missed the first time around. I still have yet to get to Fractured But Whole, but I'll probably enjoy that one once I do!

I liked the Mario Party esque battle system more of Stick of Truth more than Fractured's Fire Emblem style , but that was mostly because it didn't do it as well. Fractured is probably a more solid game all around though. Both games on my Top 200 at least.

#98 Kirby's Block Ball (Game Boy, 1995)
It's Arkanoid, but Kirby! Adding Kirby's powers to the mix where some powers can break certain blocks, which usually leads to secret areas and bonus games was a great mechanic. The different kinds of blocks in this game you had to deal with in different ways was a unique and interesting gameplay mechanic. You could also time an A hit with the paddle to make kirby puffed up, so he'd hit blocks faster and harder (and some blocks also only break in this way). Each world is themed and has I think 10 stages per world. The bonus games were especially fun to play, if you knew the secrets of how to get there, and each world's boss was fun to fight also. Implementing the Kirby powers into the game also add a unique spin. Just a very addicting and fun game, that always had a ton of replay value.

Up next: A great game based on a very good game show. Instead of its companion very good game based on its companion great game show.

#99. Death Stranding (PS4, 2019)
Honestly, I'm not really sure about how much I can say I "like" this game, but something about it is very satisfying and calming. Getting a package order, balancing it properly, and making a trek on foot across all kinds of terrain, while doing your very best not to fall over and also taking care of a baby while you're doing it, is about as Kojima as it's gonna get, and I appreciate that. I didn't really dig fighting the Shadow Realm monsters as you're never really well-equipped, but that's part of the point I suppose. You're supposed to get that UUGHHHHHH feeling whenever your magic backpack picks em up.
I like Daryl Dixon, so playing as exactly him was at least modestly appealing. Theres a few guest porters which is fun, among them Conan O'Brien and Geoff Knightly. All the acting jobs are great, Mads Mikkelsen and Troy Baker shine in their roles. Noting again, they look like them. Well, sort of. Fragile is a cool character too. Or at least she looks cool.
I have no idea what to make of the story. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all, and there's a crapton of spoilers, and I couldn't even spoil this game if I tried because I would have no idea what even to say. Maybe it's all pizzazz and no substance, but it's Kojima so it's perfectly fine with me. Enjoy your hour long final cutscene again. I did!

Anyway, the gameplay is what makes this very appealing to me, in it being an extremely unique experience, between the goal of just getting from point A to point B, but also the idea of the "network" and as you get a network online, you too, will become online, and other players structures around the world that they have built to help them in theirown games will start to become available to you. And you can leave likes and such, until they deteriorate over about 2-3 weeks in real time, unless you pump them full of more materials. Besides walking you cangraduate to a motorcycle, a truck, build roads, and eventually ziplines, especially to help through those tricky mountain segments, and let me say- THAT is the greatest feeling. That after dozens of treks up and down the damn snowy windy mountains with Shadow Realm creatures attacking you every 5 minutes... once you set up a full zipline network (aided by your network friends!) and just zip around past everything to pretty much wherever you want on the map- you feel great about it. Make sure to do the all of the pizza deliveries all the way through the end of the game!

But yeah, this game makes absolutely no sense and it's really not a good game, but I like it anyway.
Also it's probably the best-looking PS4 game I played

#100. The Stanley Parable (PC, 2013)
This is the top 100 list of a man named Wigs. Wigs sat at his computer all week, making lists. He re-arranged them, re-sorted them, argued with himself over how to label the individual games. But what effect would it have on the greater world? Would anyone really care if he switched his 100th and 99th favorite games? Would anyone notice and begrudge him for mislabeling an Action-Adventure game as a platformer? Or is anyone even reading this at all? Well, for those of you who are reading this, if you've played the game, you know the voice you're using in your head right now, and that's really the main reason for THE STANLEY PARABLE's placement on this list. After all, it's just a simple walking simulator. But also, the fact it has a pretty interesting narrative at its core, or if not, at least making the game's probably meaningless choices are fun, maybe just as fun as a supposedly meaningless choice you might make in any game, except this time, it's narrated. And your interaction with the narrator provides all the context, and fun of getting all the endings. And at least, just a little, maybe it makes you think about what really matters to you in life.

So reader, what was your favorite ending? The Broom Closet ending was my favorite ending!

Outland is a game I did not enjoy as much as I'd expect to. I like others of its genre a good bit more. Some games similar I considered close to HM, but didn't quite make the cut were Hue and the two Guacamelee games. Specifically thinking of that "colored platform switching" mechanic that is pretty core to all the games.

This will putme up to 9 HMs, I think I will stophere, But I might throw some more in later if I feel strongly about something I didn't mention yet

Honorable Mention: We <3 Katamari (PS2, 2005)
I don't have a Katamari game in my top 100 but I would be remiss to not mention one of them. With its charming, quirky humor, and your mid 00s meme potential, I think these games were more at the forefront of my mind at the time (I can't help but think of the Mega64 skit). A very satisfying and stress-reducing game to just roll shit up, set to a wonderfull eclectic soundtrack and just the right amount of weirdness. I find myself somehow surprised and not surprised that these games caught the traction they did in North America. I went with the 2nd installment because this is the one I remember spending the most time with, and being the most excited for on the coattails of the first.

Honorable Mention: Gunstar Heroes (Genesis, 1993)
I only played this game for the first time in one of the PS3 collections of Genesis games, but I'm counting it as Genesis because I remember reading about it and seeing pictures of it in Sega Visions magazine and it really catching my interest as a game I wanted to play, but it just never happened. I think of it as Sega's answer to Contra (a game I haven't even really played that extensively) but seems it really delivers well in that regard. The different weapons and co-op are fun, it controls well, and just feels like one of those definitive non-Sonic Genesis games.

Honorable Mention: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS, 2013)
Obviously, this isn't going to be the only time I mention this series through my list, but I did want to give this game a shoutout among its better peers. Everything that should make an AA game good is still here, much like it is in the others. The overall story isn't quite as good, and, like Apollo Justice: AA, it doesn't do a great job of having its supposed main character really own the story. But everything is still here that should be here, and the only bad thing I have to say about is its not as good as the other ones in the series. If you only played the OG trilogy and were soured by AJ:AA so haven't got around to this one yet, you should reconsider!
I do actually like Athena a fair bit, her part of the story is still pretty good. Blackquill is okay, he's threatening enough as a prosecutor, his story could be a bit stronger.

The best part though, is the DLC case in this game is absolutely top shelf, very likely top 5, easily the best case that's not connected to a main plot, and has some fantastic twists and plot points.

Honorable Mention - Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Sega Genesis, 1993)
I think this was the first puzzle game I ever played, and the style of Puyo Puyo remains one of my favorites. My 2nd favorite block style of puzzle, to another you'll see on the list, but on a good day, I might like Puyo Puyo more. It's fun to set up long strings of combos in advance, onlyfor your opponent to dump garbage on you.... but then you realize that can actually help extend your combo! Or hurt it. sometimes. The bloopy sound effects in this game were also always very appealing, and of course the backdrop of Sonic was a win for me...ok, well there was no Sonic. But the enemies you fight in the "campaign" were all random background robots from the cartoon... the silly one, that is, not the edgier cool one. Two of the main ones you fight were Scratch and Grounder if you remember those guys! But hey, I still liked that show too. So I had some personal interest in these robots. The chatter they smacktalked you between rounds remains legendary. I also played this game with my dad a lot. This game was the driving force for me to get Puyo Puyo Tetris too, a strongly ok game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb9g4CeI2V0

Honorable Mention - Untitled Goose Game (Switch, 2019)
HONK!
Charm and creative puzzle together is a strong appeal for me if you couldn't tell. I first played this at Extra Life 2019, with MSG, while almost everyone else in the room knew the deal with this game. Going around simply being a goose is a game experience I never knew I needed, and behold, it was. There is also a great joy in completing a task before knowing what the tasks are. It is fun to just be a jerk. Especially knowing all the jerks you're being a jerk to are way jerkier than you.

I am still shoring up my top 100, I think I have all the games I want in there, but not the order. Although I did just take a game out and replace it, so I'll throw it here in my honorable mentions before I change my mind, and that game is

Honorable Mention - Bugsnax (PS5, 2020)
We've all been waiting for a new Pokemon Snap forever and we were all given it before the actual new one came out. Catching each individual Bugsnax is its own puzzle, sort of, and it's fun for youto use your tools in different ways to catch each one, or see the interactions they have with each other. There is a great joy in shooting chocolate goo on a popsicle monster only to have a flying S'More divebomb it and set it on fire, to send it running into a lake and into your tripwire. The gameplay gets a bit repetitive after a while and there's a bit of backtracking, so that can get a tad annoying, but it's not long enough to really wear it out.

This game really shines in its story, characters, and presentation. As you might have figured, there's more to the game than the cutesy package it presents, but I wouldn't go as far to say its a trap game, creepypasta, anything Doki Doki Literature Club, etc. It just winds up being a bit more real than you expect. The characters have real issues they go through, and their relationships with each other feel genuine, and strained when they don't like each other. Without going into too much detail, the plot is interesting enough to keep you engaged in its mystery, and its themes are a little more mature than you would think, but remains very entertaining.

Minor spoiler... it's sort of implied in the trailer if you've seen it, but just in case:
There is no greater joy....uh...shock? Horror? Then feeding your Grumpus friends Bugsnax and watching them slowly transform into horrible monstrosities, caused by YOU. YOU DID THIS. YOU MADE A GRUMPUS INTO A WATERMELON CHEESE AND COOKIE HYBRID!!! But I greatly look forward into seeing what creative liberaties and choices other people made. I want to see everyone's individual Grumpuses. My Beffica was a Gummi nightmare. I think they have good design also, since you can still tell them apart even after they have transformed.

End of game spoilers:
The ending though, does start to dip its tail a tiny bit into that horror pool, and while I was kind of expecting the game to go this way it kind of goes to show the game is pretty horrifying when you think about it. The Bugsnax being paratsites all along was a neat spin and That Eggabell stayed behind with Lizbert to become ONE WITH THE ISLAND to save everyone. Good ending. And the fact the game ends with that happy song is hilarious now and definitely has a different meaning. If you have played this game and haven't got the bad ending, which I assume you haven't because it's really hard to mess up to get there, you should watch it to see just how horrifying this game can actually be! Hope there is a sequel , like they left it open for!

"Kinda bug and kinda snack
Try to catch 'em in your trap
Feed somebody and you'll see
We are whatever we eat"

Anyway, I nearly had this game in my top 100, and it's probably 101,with the main things holding it back beingthe slightly repetitive game play, and the fact I definitely lucked my way into catching some Bugsnax without really knowing what I did or how I did it. Decent game, great characters and story. Keeps surprising you at different points with the game being deeper than you expect.

Honorable Mention - Warioware: Touched (DS, 2004)
I'm not gonna have as much to say about this one, but I definitely enjoy all the Warioware games. They're fun minigames, and that's all you can ask really. There isn't quite enough substance I think in any of them for it to be a top 100 game, but they're enjoyable on their own. Definitely reminiscent of an older time of games, as far as repeating simple tasks over and over. I think like everyone, we like the 9-volt games the best. I picked Touched as my favorite here because I was excited to play it for a system like the DS, where I thought it was a perfect fit to use the DS's newfound capabilities. I don't really remember the specific games in one vs enough, but just that the DS gimmick made perfect sense with this game.

Ok I think I am pretty close to my top 100, I am going to finalize up and make sure the order is good over the next couple days, but I'll tide y'all over with some Honorables in the meantime, a pair of N64 games.

Honorable Mention - Mario Tennis (N64, 2000)
With the bad taste left in my mouth by Mario Tennis Aces, I've been thinking ofthis game a bit recently, how great and smooth it always felt, how fun and modestly different each of the characters felt, the different modes, courts, styles, etc... and I wasn't really sure why Aces was so much worse, but it just is. I remember enjoying the Bowser court alot, and played as Mario as a ton because it was fun to control him after he won a point, when he runs around a ton.

Honorable Mention - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (N64, 2000)
This game feels a bit sluggish at times, but gets a ton of points for the wonderful feeling of combining powers, which provides a bunch of fun in trying all the different ones. The game itself is kind of flat, and having to keep certain powers throughout a whole level to open up a secret at the end is kind of annoying- it limits your ability to be creative. Still, it has a great and creepy final boss fight, true to most kirby games, has enough secrets to be interesting, and has a few good minigames.

My favorite powerups are:
The Electric Tether Rock (Stone+Spark),
The Fridge that spawns food - fun if not kinda useless (Ice+Spark),
Swiss Army Kirby (Spike+Spike),
Exploding Snowman (Bomb+Ice), and
Curling Stone (Ice+Stone)

really I could keep going, they're all great fun. Just wish the game was a little more interesting!

Yeah I'll be in. I'm on a laptop but it can handle most things.

wishlist is here:
https://store.steampowered.com/wishlist/profiles/76561197995258390/#sort=order
Feel free to use that if you want - I haven't touched it too much lately so it would sort of be a surprise! But I've been craving sort of narrativey or innovative "puzzle" games lately in the lines of Outer Wilds, The Witness, Papers Please, or Obra Dinn- if you have anything like that in mind, great! If not, I'm pretty receptive to whatever you think I might enjoy also!
Also if you want to check if I've played something since I play a lot of stuff I could play on steam on PS4/5, you can cross-ref this if you want:
