I would not take it for granted that Pokemon is #4 or better. The conversation and general mood among that fanbase around newer games, the franchise in general, and its developer has soured horribly since Sword and Shield came out and the average gamefaqser still doesn't care deeply about anything besides the first two games. I'd give Smash a shot at the upset.

Pokemon's certainly not beating Final Fantasy. Everything not-RBY/GSC (or a remake of them) would lose to even FFIV, and might all lose to FFV or FFXII too. Back in the late 2010's when people were at least reasonably content around the direction of the franchise and the vibes from Pokemon Go weren't yet a distant ephemera, I could see reasons to consider the upset despite that, but nowadays? nope.

Pokemon over Final Fantasy isn't a given, but everything not-FF7 may as well not exist for the impact it has on the strength of the FF series. We've seen this before.

And given how Cloud has fallen off a cliff in recent years while Pokemon has skyrocketed...let's say there are reasons to doubt FF is a given.

I hate to be sales figures guy, but part of it is sales figures, and how disproportionally strong Zelda was prior to Breath of the Wild to its sales.

Even the biggest modern Final Fantasy doesn't outpace peak Final Fantasy sales by much, if at all.

Meanwhile Breath of the Wild outsold the entire first release 3D Zelda library combined, which already had the strongest game on the site and the strongest game of the 2000s.

If we're talking about series that are nowhere near as strong as they used to be, Smash is in the conversation (and it still got whipped by FF in 2006 anyway).

Fallout isn't touching FF on the strength of 3, 4, and New Vegas.

I feel very confident Smash beats everything it would have last time (except Pokemon), and also very confident it loses to everything it would have last time (on natural strength).

It certainly doesn't help that the entire sub-Smash tier, your Metroids, Metal Gears, Mega Mans etc. have all also been irrelevant for the last decade plus, and no amount of SNES Boost(!) will fix the gap.

I dont think its necessarily that modern JRPGs arent worth much so much as it is that the big JRPG series have declined. However, Persona and Xenoblade have risen.

So the question now is is Final Fantasy even a top 5 series on here any more?

Let's not go crazy, it's 4th behind Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon at worst. I guess I could see an argument for Smash too, but that's a hard sell.

My hot take time here: Final Fantasy XVI's lunch has already been eaten by Baldur's Gate of all things.

It's not Rebirth hurting XVI I'm worried about, it's that modern JRPGs aren't worth much here anymore (WRPGs have taken over in terms of RPG dominance), and Final Fantasy isn't the top modern JRPG series.

Master Hand beats Clive easily, but Master Hand also beats every Final Fantasy character made after 2001.

Edit: And as for XVI vs. XV, by the time XVI is no longer hampered by being a PS5 exclusive (and being hampered by being modern Final Fantasy), it'll be even more hampered by being old news.

they saw that everyone loved the nickelodeon broadcasts and went 'what if we do more things to make football fun'

and i say that as a big ol' football fan, the dumb broadcasts (nick, manningcast) are miles more fun than serious suit man analysis

Scorpion was stronger than those three in 2013 and he's the only one who I would expect to have done anything but fallen off a cliff since then. and tbh I wouldn't be surprised if he was a good bit stronger than in 2013.

There probably isn't a huge gap between GLaDOS and, say, Revolver Ocelot or Commander Shepard, but I'd take Falco over DeDeDe or King K. Rool without a second thought.

That might be bad logic, but we're discussing re-running 4-ways.

Weirdly despite being the significantly higher power fight I think the actual Shiva fight is a lot easier than Ifrit, since she responds to her meter depleting with a massive stat drop while Ifrit responds with an AoE attack and getting back up to half.

Either that or my Shiva fight is broken.
