Rey's parentage was an intentional mystery, tied into why she was so powerful. They talked about it, referenced it, and drew attention to it.

They teased around with Rey's parentage but I think they made it explicit enough that she was not Luke's daughter and very likely not any other character's daughter. I remember this is the thing I argued about the most after 7 - how the movie made it very clear that it was impossible for Luke or major Jedi to be her parents. The only possibility was she was the daughter to some nameless Jedi at the Academy.

So the question is, why is this girl who is very likely not from any royal blood so powerful? And they answered that in this movie by showing how much strength she gains from balance in the force.

How did TFA make that explicit?? It definitely teased her parantage and left us questioning it on purpose. The whole lightsaber scene was just to throw the audience off. And then she somehow was getting visions of Luke's planet island which hinted that she had some kind of connection to Luke.

Just saw it, time to catch up the discussion.

But I didn't really care for it. Easily the worst of the non prequels. I think the problem is there's no big bad. Why hype up Snoke for him to be nothing. A bit too much in the comedy department too. It worked last movie but they need to do something else.

Benicio del Toro was the best part of the movie.

I found his character and fake stutter very strange.

You know what my main problem is with these new films though, they didn't really take time to develop the conflict.

There's just a First Order (Empire) and a Rebellion. No explanation of why, it just is. That doesn't really raise the stakes for me. How did Snoke and co. build this First Order after the Empire was exposed as murderous overlords? Why did people go for that again?

The whole universe doesn't have enough backstory going for me and because of that I just don't care as much.

Why is there an Empire in episode 4? Where did it come from? Who built it? Man this lack of backstory is just completely killing the movie for me.

This is such a dumb rebuttal I'm tired of seeing. There's a huge difference between the two scenarios. This new trilogy is following a mere 30 years after the end of Ep. VI. There's preestablished content that literally everyone knows about now. A New Hope was the very first of the series and people literally knew nothing whatsoever about anything. Not to mention the IRL time difference and how movies have changed and the way the stories and plots are handled.

I was really hoping Rey was going to be gray or just a balanced force user and I feel like the movie was kind of leading that way, but then at the end, they were all nope! She's light side and she's gonna bring back the Jedi even after everything Luke was going on about.

I kind of have mixed feelings on the movie. I've seen it twice now now but it's just not my favorite. It had some cool parts but there were just so many questions left unanswered and it didn't do much to expand the overall saga of the franchise. Like the movie felt kind of small. TFA just completely sucked me in and I loved every minute of it. This one didn't...

Snoke being completely wasted? Served no purpose. The fact they are making a trilogy with no overarching story is disturbing. Rian Johnson outright said he was able to do what he wanted and he just cut out things Abrams was doing because he felt like it. That is not good storytelling.

This is what gets me the most. It still blows my mind that all three movies weren't written all at once with one overarching plot and plot points to carry throughout the trilogy...

I loved it. I did start getting burnt out partway but I was doing every single thing in every area before moving on to the next. But overall I really liked it and had a good time. I'm one of the few that actually liked DA2 though.

That's the one I really remember most. It went on forever and GameFAQs Flash is so stupid. Those contests never seemed to take personality into account it seems. Still lobed then though. The MPFC contests were what brought me to B8 in the first place.
