When it comes to this music stuff I'm ready to assume it's an issue with the publisher rather than the licenser. People are still losing it about GBC not officially coming over, but considering it Toei it's really not surprising, they're kind of incompetent with this stuff. Maybe the same here with Bushiroad?

Watching through this still, and though the vibe is more Love Live compared to the much more dire vibe of MyGO, there's still a major difference here that's causing me to appreciate it a bit more on the actual performance front. Love Live always felt unrealistic. Like, maybe I'm remembering wrong, but at no point did anyone in Love Live....suck? They practice a ton, do wayyyy more actual musical sequences, but they're pretty much professional idols from the very second they get on stage. Here, in both shows I've watched so far, the MCs....are not great at playing! Obviously they get better as it goes, but 5 episodes in and Kasumi is still absolutely terrible at guitar. Anon can play a little bit from the get go in MyGO, but it's still at an amateur level and she's basically faking it for attention. Honoka in Love Live, however, is at the same skill level in episode 1 of the show as she is in the movie, despite whatever the narrative is claiming.

Maybe that's why I constantly ended up skipping all the performances in LL, I had no investment. I watched that show for the humor and character personalities, I didn't care about the group.

A pretty modern, normal drama idol setting, just with, uh, that? Or something like that. I watched like 2 or 3 episodes while it was airing. It felt like it was setting it up to be very competitive/cut throat.

Wasn't there some thing with the WUG creator where he was like "all anime being made nowadays suck except for mine, I must save anime"?

I really thought that was him but maybe I'm mixing it up with someone else.

....Was that the one where the band decisions were being made by, like....a secret underground idol deity/super computer, played completely straight? Whatever that one was I watched a couple episodes of lol.

This is a fairly predictable list for the most part.

However, I have heard a lot of Naruto OPs, but have never heard that second place song a single time in my life.

Sometimes you can only handle so much secondary embarrassment lol.

I was able to get through the MyGO scene because it was more depressing than embarrassing (little did I know the former was about to get much worse by the end of the episode!), but I did have to pause several times, took me like 6 minutes to get through.

Still waiting for the supposedly disastrous, franchise threatening production. Show is fun so far and looks better than half the anime airing this season. Are the CGs going to look really bad or something? I already expect music CGs in 2017 to look bad in the first place, I wouldn't care.

I'm definitely still going to check if Bandori (I'm learning!) S1, skipping parts entirely isn't my jam.

Despite taking so long to watch it, I fully expected a, like, major awakening to a love for Bocchi. Hmmm. I guess it's a combination of setting expectations, and also watching it in the middle of all these drama band shows when this seems to be a different type of show entirely that just happens to revolve around a band.

I'll give it a bit more, I at least want to meet the drunk girl.

If I'm already 100% over the "She has social anxiety" joke 2 episodes into Bochi the Rock, is there any hope at all of it turning around for me?

Painting a target in my back here, but this one is a struggle to watch. Obviously it's a great production, but it is not actually doing anything for me. It's all kind of.....annoying....

I would say it's worse than any of the main 3 DRs. It's better than UDG, though.

Yeah, there's that too. I didn't like the performance at all. Aesthetically I also think Ave Mujica is extremely lame, compared to MyGO (and to be clear I mean the band here) which has a super cool look. I really liked Anon's costumes, which are VERY in line with my own aesthetics.

I'm looking forward to the next season of the show itself making me eat my words. I really hate the masks though. A lot.

Oh, I don't mean it's not something I don't want to see at all. I just really wish it wasn't the last episode of this show.

Again, I think if it was 12 episodes of MyGO and then here's the MyGO OVA, mentally I would have had 0 issues at all.

One thing that's become obvious to me is a certain amateurness makes me like these band shows more. It feels more raw.

I felt more emotion towards the band having to restart the song twice in episode 7 than I did towards anything in 4 seasons of Love Live. And I LIKE Love Live.

I don't know what the other Bang Dreams are like yet (have now found out that there's actually no way to watch S1 outside of piracy anymore even though every single movie and other season is available, which is hilarious), but this having so much restraint in regards to just showing them playing music, saving it for the extremely, EXTREMELY strong halfway point and the finale, really made this feel like so much more than a another gacha spinoff. I think that's part of why I could have really done without that last episode, at least without knowing it was coming to prepare myself. I wanted one final episode of MyGO, on it's own as an independent property, not the next step in the Bang Dream property machine.

This is the most poorly timed product release of all time.

Definitely agreed. I do think this new release is going to have value even if they were adding literally nothing to it either way, though, because it truly ran absolutely horribly. The constant load times on Switch legitimately drop my score down, like, a point and a half.

I don't understand why they didn't try to market Hi-Fi Rush instead of shadow dropping it onto Game Pass.

Of course it underperformed, they didn't put any effort into making it a success.

The game didn't underperform at all apparently, both Microsoft and Tango said the game was a big success by all metrics.

It just didn't matter to them anymore.

Microsoft literally would have lost money this year if not for the Activision acquisition based on the earnings call from a week or 2 ago, in the red. They are about to become a a Call of Duty and Forza machine, and let the existing Blizzard games ride until they die. Gears of War and Halo have both plumeted as brands. Starfield did fine but failed to establish interest as a new pillar and ABSOLUTELY did not set the world on fire like Microsoft was banking on. Elders Scrolls is probably half a decade away still.

They are unironically banking on....a Perfect Dark reboot. I expect that to end up cancelled.

Geneology Remake is my most anticipated video game, but I will not buy new hardware for it, so that thing better show the fuck up.

I say this without exaggeration, I think Xbox as a brand is meaningless. They are the industry joke. The only good thing they have to their name is a service that lets you borrow games as much as you want for cheap.

Yeah you gotta make sure all that money goes to Bethesda proper, so they can put more work into the game that was so underwhelming that the big modders stopped working on it because it was too boring to bother.

I haven't played all of Hi-Fi Rush yet since the PS5 version is buggy for me, but what I did play was extremely cool, and was the first Microsoft exclusive game (at the time) that I cared about at all since Halo Reach.

So yeah of course that means it's killed.

Slightly annoyed that I played the Switch version which ran like complete booty and had awful load times....but that's par for the course for the Switch at this point, SMT Vengeance is in the same boat.

Man, they're still holding back enough software to do a Direct that isn't featuring the new console? Feels like they've been in wind-down mode since Engage launched and all the "obvious" guesses about what's cooking or otherwise delayed projects seem destined to be cross-gen if it's on the original Switch at all.

I legitimately do not think this is going to truly be a next gen console, this will be a Pro. Supposedly all the old controllers still work with the new hardware natively, based on reports over the last few days. There will probably be very few games that aren't "cross gen", and considered the Switch is still selling it makes sense.

Someone else said Wii U, but no, I'm all in that this is going to be a New 3DS situation.

I really feel like that last episode was, like......and OVA, that's just being listed as episode 13? Just a bunch of setup for the VILLAIN ARC, which I can't say is the most exciting prospect, but I'll of course give it a shot. Those outfits are lame as hell though lol.

That aside though, it's not like episode 12 didn't feel like a very strong end to the season. I wish there was more, but that's how these things go I suppose.

I teared up a few times watching this show, it really was amazing. It is again a real shame I didn't watch this sooner, it's easily my pick for the best seasonal anime of 2023. When I watched episode 1 by itself it was fine, but the show just keeps escalating more and more, that energy never let up. I'm glad the next series directly connects, but again.....well, we'll see what that's doing, the last "episode" certainly laid some groundwork.

I will probably consider checking out the other BD stuff. Tomorrow, though, finally going to watch Bocchi the Rock......I'm actually a bit worried about that one, I've been exposed to so many jokes and clips from it over the past 2 years, I wonder how much is left in there to enjoy.

Took a brief break to go back and watch the second musical sequence in episode 7 again.

The whole episode is amazing, those scenes structured like your viewing rooms and hallways from a security camera, but the awkard first performance (so much that I had to raise the episode out of secondhand embarrassment more than once) that manages to bring it together by the end, that you'd expect to be a triumphant occasion, but then it's follow by the second, legitimately *fantastic* performance, that is instead an absolute *tragedy* narratively, it's just so surreal. Like, one of my favorite band/idol songs ever in any anime, but the entire time you just want it to end because playing the song was a huuuuuge mistake and Soyo is breaking down on stage the whole time and none of them noticed because they're either too enraptured or, I'm Anon's case, doing everything she can just to keep up

It sounds like the original anime is more on the Idolmaster/LL side of things like I expected with this one, probably more towards IM?

Also I googled Ave Mujica since I saw that's getting an anime next year, and uh....that's QUITE the aesthetic lol.

This series is definitely a drama. I was amazed halfway through realizing there had been, like, one noteable sequence of humor besides just a little quirk here or there. You've got a lead singer who's legitimately on the spectrum (I cannot IMAGINE this is remotely contentious in the fanbase if they don't ever outright say it, it's a constant presence for her from literally her very first scene), and every other girl is battling in their own personal issues and hangups. No Nico Nico Nis here's, no offense Nico you are a treasure.

I expected a low budget Love Live, but really these shows aren't even similar besides "Lives". By the halfway point there's only been a single instance of actually showing a song being played, and it was a flashback montage
(All of episode 3 being in the first person was super cool). I definitely understand the take I've seen that MyGo walked so Girls Band Cry could run.

Really, the only issue I have is that the VA work is pretty unbalanced. Anon herself sounds, uh, bad? Like, noteabley bad. Still not totally used to it.

It's probably happening at super speed! Even if he's changing in less than 1 seconds, he still has to go through the process, the boots don't teleport on.

Man I am really disappointed I missed this while it was airing.

Summer 2023 was also, for me, the worst season for new anime in years, I really could have used this.

Superman Unchained was pretty good by New 52 standards, I'll admit.
