Seven women of South Korean nationality attempted to smuggle gold into Japan late last month by concealing it in their rectums, officials at a central Japan airport said Tuesday.

In most gold smuggling cases uncovered at Chubu airport in Aichi Prefecture, offenders concealed the gold on their person, such as in their underwear, officials said.

According to the officials, the seven women in their 50s to 60s arrived from Incheon Airport in South Korea, passing themselves off as tourists participating in a tour before being caught by metal detectors at the Japanese airport.

The gold had been processed into small nuggets and bagged in transparent pouches concealed in their rectums, according to the officials. The women were apparently planning to retrieve the gold in rest rooms after clearing immigration and customs, the officials said.

As a growing number of gold smuggling cases have been discovered in Japan recently, the government is considering applying stricter penalties on offenders. The Nagoya Customs' Chubu airport branch is set to impose fines on the women, who will have the gold returned to them after they pay the fines, according to customs.

Japan tops the world as the country with the lowest rate of newborn mortality in 2016, followed by Iceland and Singapore, while Pakistan is the riskiest place to be born according to a new UNICEF report launched on Tuesday.

"Japan, Iceland and Singapore are the three safest countries in which to be born, as measured by their newborn mortality rates," the report, called "Every Child Alive," said.

"Babies born in Japan stand the best chance of surviving," it said, reporting a 1 in 1,111 risk of death for newborns in the country, followed by Iceland with a 1 in 1,000 risk and Singapore at 1 in 909.

On the other hand, it reported that "children born in Pakistan face the worst odds" with a 1 in 22 chance of death.

According to the 33-page report, the risk of dying as a newborn varies widely with location of birth. Annually, some 2.6 million babies die before turning a month old, with roughly one million of them dying on the day of birth. An additional 2.6 million babies each year are stillborn.

Eight of the 10 countries with the highest newborn mortality rates are in sub-Saharan Africa. Following Pakistan, the Central African Republic and Afghanistan are the second and third most risky places to be born, respectively.

"Japan has tackled this issue of every child alive historically and we have heavily invested our government resources and knowledge to solve this problem," Japan's Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Yasuhisa Kawamura told an audience attending the New York launch of the report.

He also stressed the importance his country places on ensuring other nations are not left behind, referring to a global push to improve the lives of millions around the globe while placing special emphasis on the most vulnerable such as infants, whom he said need the greatest level of protection.

"Most of all, newborns die because they are poor," said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF's executive director in New York. "Babies born to the poorest families are more than 40 percent more likely to die in the newborn period than the babies in the richest families."

Despite the fact that roughly 7,000 newborn babies die every day -- with more than 80 percent of the deaths preventable with "basic solutions" such as affordable health care and well-trained medical staff -- Fore pointed to improvements made in countries such as Bangladesh, where the mortality rate has fallen by more than two-thirds.

Bangladesh's Ambassador Masud bin Momen explained how his country has realized a dramatic reduction in newborn deaths from 241,000 in 1990 to 62,000 last year.

His country, he said, has committed itself to improving the odds for babies by launching a national newborn health campaign recently. This has included the introduction of special newborn care units in public hospitals in 54 districts, though further support is needed in another 20 districts.

He also said he anticipated the influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar would likely translate into thousands of pregnant women who will be facing difficulties in safely giving birth and in keeping their children alive.

"We request UNICEF to immediately extend their Every Child Alive campaign to the Rohingya refugee camps and save lives," he said.

A man was in danger of drowning when he fell off of a bridge and into the freezing fast-moving waters of River Irwell in Bury this Saturday.

Police Constable Mohammed Nadeem, who had already been on the scene, immediately made the 8-foot jump into the water so he could rescue the man. The student officers bodycam captured harrowing footage of the entire incident.

Even though he was weighed down by his heavy gear, Nadeem says that he was able to grab the distressed man and haul him to the side of the river where they were later pulled out by his fellow officers of the Greater Manchester Police Department.

Nadeem later told the BBC: I cant swim. Im not a good swimmer at all and having all the extra body gear was very hard but somehow I got to him and we got to the side and waited for help.

It was very dangerous but I just had to go in seeing this man drowning I just couldnt wait.

According to Nadeems superintendent, the young officer is now being called The Hoff by his cohorts as an affectionate homage to David Hasselhoffs character on the Baywatch TV show.

Tess Aboughoushe was just leaving a chiropractors appointment last Wednesday when she suddenly found herself in the middle of what felt like a scene from a movie.

Aboughoushe had been returning to her office in downtown Edmonton when she heard a woman down the street yell that a man had stolen her wallet. Sure enough, a man started running away from the scene of the crime but not before Aboughoushe could take off after him.

After chasing him for two blocks, Aboughoushe rounded the corner into an alleyway and found that the burglar had stopped running and had started to cry instead.

He came out from behind the dumpster and says, in a conciliatory way, Here is the wallet, I cant do this anymore, Im sorry, just take it, take it, she told CBC Radios Edmonton AM.

So I took the wallet, and the woman caught up soon after. I gave it back to her and he stayed there, apologizing a lot.

Recognizing that the man was distressed, Aboughoushe took him to a caf down the street and bought him a large black coffee. The man explained that he had come to the city with his friend from Calgary, but they had ditched him in Edmonton without any money.

Aboughoushe did her best to console the man before showing him how to get to the public library where he could seek help from the social workers on staff. She says that she hopes that the man gets the help that he needs, and she has no regrets over her actions from that day.

You kill more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, she said. I wanted to show him some compassion.

A woman is fighting for her life after she was allegedly raped with a metal rod by a gang of men.

The woman, believed to be 19 or 20, was discovered with her intestines outside her body under a bridge in south Dinajpur. It is believed that she had been lying there for around 18 hours following the brutal attack in West Bengal before she was found by a passerby.

Police said that a metal object had been inserted inside her over the weekend while returning from a fair.

Dhamu Soren told the Hindustan Times: I noticed the woman lying in an unconscious state. I sprinkled water on her face and she stirred. At that time, I noticed her intestine was coming out from her private parts.

He added: The woman told me [the attacker], a resident of Dehaband village, and some other persons abducted her and gang-raped her in a secluded place. It seems after raping the girl the accused assaulted her with some weapon as a result of which her intestine came out.

Medical superintendent Amit Kumar Dawn said: A team of specialist doctors have conducted surgeries and she is responding well.

From that moment onwards she decided to stop shaving and hiding away her hair. Leah now embraces her hair, wearing low-cut, sleeveless tops and skirts with bare legs out in public without worrying about what people think.

Leah shares photos of her hair on Instagram, and next month will be photographed for a book promoting diversity, called Underneath We Are Women. I realized that I never really disliked how the hair looked. The problem was not with the hair, it was with peoples perception of it. used to be scared of people noticing my hair but now I embrace it and let it grow. Im unique and that is perfectly fine. I do still shave my face because I like how my face looks without hair

It has been incredibly empowering. I hope that sharing my story will give others courage. And to women who have hirsutism; you are not alone.

Leah Jorgensen, 33, has spent years shaving her entire body because she felt like a freak for her body and facial hair. She has polycystic ovary syndrome, which causes her to have male-pattern hair growth on her chest, her chin, and her stomach.

Its not something we often see hair anywhere below the the eyebrows remains a taboo and so those with more hair than the norm can feel like pressured to shave, wax, or epilate. That can be time-consuming and painful, not to mention the general unpleasantness of feeling like youre weird and unattractive for something entirely natural.

Thats why its important when someone does showcase their body hair, as a reminder to others that theyre not alone in having a little extra fur.

From the age of 14 Leah was bullied for the way she looked, and chose to cover up in full-sleeved, high-necked shirts and trousers. In her twenties she began shaving, spending hours removing the hair from her chin, cheeks, upper lip, chest, stomach, arms, legs, and back.

Leahs insecurity stopped her from getting close to people she didnt have her first kiss until age 27 and avoided the dentist for twelve years. I had never seen women who looked like me, says Leah. I was so ashamed that I didnt want to talk about it.

My way of coping with that shame and embarrassment was to hide. My daily goal for a long time was to just get through the day without anyone noticing how hairy I was.

Because I have so much of it, it was very difficult to hide it. I developed a terrible case of anxiety and it really took a toll on my mental health. I had a bad experience with my doctor. She had never seen such an extreme case of hirsutism and she was startled and made a facial expression.

She had a figure on a piece of paper and she drew where the hair was. I was so sensitive that it really upset me and made me feel like a freak. In junior high school a classmate noticed the hair on my face and there was this group of girls that would tease me about it and call me a man.

I felt ashamed, embarrassed and scared, like I was somehow less of a woman. I covered up with clothes and shaved my face, and if I was going to be showing any part of my body I would shave it. It gets hot and humid here in the summer and I would wear hoodies year round so I would be drowning in sweat.

People would ask me, Why are you wearing that? and I was just like, Leave me alone.

I was really convinced I would lose my friends and my family would disown me and I wouldnt be able to get a job or a boyfriend, I would just live a miserable life alone.

Everything changed in 2015, when Leah was hit by a car. She had to be taken to hospital by ambulance, and then had her clothes cut off by paramedics to undergo surgery. This meant people saw the extent of Leahs hair growth but to her surprise, they werent at all bothered.

I realised no one cared what I looked like, she explains, they just saw me as a person. It really helped me to get over it.

A teacher who was killed during the Feb. 14 Florida high school massacre in Florida left his fiancee funeral instructions in case a school shooting ever claimed his life. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School geography teacher Scott Beigel, 35, brought up the subject while watching coverage of a previous school shooting on television

"Promise me if this ever happens to me, you will tell them the truth -- tell them what a jerk I am," Beigel told his fiancee, Gwen Gossler. "Don't talk about the hero stuff."

In a touching tribute, Gossler recalled the conversation on Feb. 18, the day of Beigel's funeral, Fox 8 reports. "Ok, Scott," said Gossler at Beigel's funeral. "I did what you asked. Now I can tell the truth. You are an amazingly special person. You are my first love and soul mate."

Beigel was one of 17 people shot and killed at the high school. The teacher was reportedely trying to protect his students, unlocking his classroom door to let them before attempting to lock it again. Beigel died in the process.

"When he opened the door, he had to re-lock it so we could stay safe, but he didn't get the chance to," said Kelsey Friend, one of Beigel's students, reports the Sun-Sentinel. "He was in the doorway and the door was still open and the shooter probably didnt know we were in there because he was lying on the floor. If the shooter had come in the room, I probably wouldn't be [alive]."

Loved ones are now paying tribute to Beigel.

"Mr. Beigel was my hero and he still will forever be my hero," Kelsey added. "I will never forget the actions that he took for me and for fellow students in the classroom. I am alive today because of him. If I could see him right now...I'd give him a huge teddy bear to say thank you," she said. "But, unfortunately, I can't do that."

Beigel also worked as a counselor at Camp Starlight in Pennsylvania, a place that praised him as a "friend and hero" on Facebook.

At his funeral, Beigel's father said his son had always been a hero.

"I dont want Scott's memory to be the horrific moment on that afternoon," said his father, Michael Schulman, Newsday reports. "Scott's heroism was not that instant. Scott's heroism was his entire life."

"The pride and the love and the admiration that I have for my son, there are no words," added Beigel's mother, Linda. "He is so humble, and he never knew the value he had in everybody's life. The school knows he was always committed to whatever it was that he was doing."

A leading member of the U.S. Marines has warned that the eruption of a war is likely imminent. Gen. Robert Neller, the commandant of the Marine Corps, made the comments during a visit to a contingent of 300 U.S. Marines deployed in Norway, according to Military.com.

"I hope I'm wrong, but there's a war coming," Neller stated in remarks to the troops, reported Military.com. "You're in a fight here, an informational fight, a political fight, by your presence."

The Marines were deployed to Norway to improve their experience in cold weather operations. Norway has a 120-mile border with Russia, which is seen as a U.S. rival.

Sgt. Major Ronald Green of the Marine Corps backed up Neller's remarks and stressed that the U.S. could take rapid action. "Just remember why you're here," said Green. "They're watching. Just like you watch them, they watch you. We've got 300 marines up here; we could go from 300 to 3,000 overnight. We could raise the bar."

Military.com reported in May that soldiers had been instructed not to refer to Russia by name in interviews with the media so as to avoid raising tensions. The comments followed the release Dec. 18 of the Trump administration's National Security Strategy. The document identified Russia as posing a threat to the United States.

"With its invasions of Georgia and Ukraine, Russia demonstrates its willingness to violate the sovereignty of states in the region," it was stated in the document. The strategy pointed to Russia and China as countries which "challenge American power, influence and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity," according to USA Today.

In a speech accompanying the release of the document, President Donald Trump referred to the two countries as "rival powers." Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the strategy by accusing the United States of aggression.

"The U.S. has recently unveiled its new defense strategy," Putin said. "Speaking the diplomatic language, it is obviously offensive, and if we switch to the military language, it is certainly aggressive."

Putin took issue with the creation of "offensive infrastructures" in Europe, and argued that the U.S. has violated the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Specifically, Putin noted an American missile base in Romania which he alleged was capable of housing ground-to-ground mid-range cruise missiles.

"Russia has a sovereign right and all possibilities to adequately and in due time react to such potential threats," added Putin.

The Russian president then suggested it would be necessary for Russia to further develop its nuclear forces. He noted that Moscow's current nuclear arsenal offers reliable strategic deterrence.
