pikachu because even though i watched all of the anime all the way up to gen 5 i have an irrational hatred for voice acted pikachu use in games (yes eevee is also voiced but at least it isn't in as many games and eevee is just a better mascot game functionality wise (even if it can't evolve...))

i tried the demo though and i'm less sure i'll pick it up now (i like the art and sound and puzzles, but it's also a bit of a precision platformer thanks to its often unforgiving timer, so it can take a while to execute the solutions which i'm not a huge fan of. maybe kubinashi will be better)

also tried some demos during next fest so i can say i'm definitely picking up inscryption next week. definitely the most ambitious game from this dev to date

voice of cards demo was solid too but i'm not sure about it at its current price (especially with all the dlc before launch...)

also doubt i'll pick up haiku now or any of the other hollow knight inspired solo dev indie games like it that also had demos, as they all had some problems. i did enjoy transiruby though (which i didn't realise was also effectively a solo dev indie game until the demo)

i'm slightly surprised it's doing so well when i've noticed so many jumping to pso2ngs lately

Best: Earwax (fight me i swear to god if it gets the worst) HMs to tee k.o., drawful, fibbage, bracketeering, guesspionage and the fibbages and quiplashes. trivia murder party is solid too but way too heavily dependent on US knowledge
Worst: Word Spud lol

i'm also slightly surprised drawful 2 was excluded (yes it's standalone but still)

The high scores/reviews for this series has confused me. I enjoyed it, but I'm also a fan of this sub-genre. There are so many deathmatch/deathgame films out there, and they almost always get shit scores. Yes, they are a guilty pleasure for me, so I don't care, but seeing Squid Game suddenly be super praised just confuses me. And it's not like Squid Game has some kind of high art or quality to propel it over other good ones in the genre...it really plays out like alot of others. Is it really just that most mainstream watchers have only seen Hunger Games and nothing else?

... i guess its focus on the "human" element of "having a choice" and still participating because lottery (wow relatable) is the key difference

i also don't like being that guy but in retrospect it's really got some issues with gender

Want: those randomised daily smash character polls earlier this year from johnbobb made me realise I'd be very happy with a lot of characters, so it's difficult to really say. i guess what i'm really hoping for most is something ridiculous that everybody can get behind, like sakurai himself or a playable smash ball that rams into everything with a completely different control scheme

Lots of good ones, sure, but none of them have blown me away as top tier. Plus Dread could always flop, though people seem high on it so far.

that's fair. if silksong had any hope of being this year it'd be at the top among them for sure, but even then... a year with axiom verge 2, ender lilies and psycron (and lost ruins wasn't that great but i liked it too) isn't a bad one for metroidvanias.

need to get around to GRIME/Greak/Astalon/Phoenotopia/Deedlit etc... (and i suppose the last wonder boy and blaster master entries kind of count too)

transiruby and glimmer in mirror might make it before the end of the year too along with the touhouvania remake

i think i'm still forgetting a few but oh well

it's almost a shame dread is happening since it kills any hopes of any other metroidvania from this year featuring anywhere in gotys (and there have really been a lot of great ones this year)

actually it looks like they have them and a lot of other games from microids 90% off there currently (so even cheaper than the steam discounts save for syberia obv).

figured i'd have a look at how everything's reviewing now too

a little bit surprised to see opus: echo of starsong sitting at an 88 average (albeit from a sadly modest 7 reviews), putting it in the running for the top of this month alongside deathloop, tales of arise and i guess death stranding definitive counts (slightly surprised to not see any of eastward/deltarune ch2/sable/12 mins/kena up there)

i also noticed that metallic child and severed steel are also rather starved for coverage (surprisingly, despite maintaining actually pretty good player counts from what i noticed on steam... severed steel's got more people playing currently than toem which got a decent amount (and about 4 times as many as skatebird) and metallic child has nearly 420 right now (so over 20 times as many as skatebird...)) despite seeming pretty legit

finally looked at the japanese direct

neat to see custom robo games also coming to switch online to some degree

also what was that music in their dread trailer

yeah news is the only mnemonic i've used (and only like once or twice in my life when i was a lot younger. generally i think of them in nsew order so it's not that helpful)

in truth, living in a country right before the date line kind of makes the concepts of east and west awkward so memorising them clockwise probably would've been better, not that it really affects me
