it could be worse, i could've just dumped all 256 town-viable songs i had to narrow down from those games...

maybe could've done a bracket out of them too

and i guess here's (most of) my noms proper before i have to make more sacrifices

Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Labyrinth III - Fetid Necropolis
https://youtu.be/2j1NztNeYsc (a few days ago i think i mentioned i hoped nobody had ninja'd my secret EO "town" pick and i'm sure somebody out there thought i meant lost shinjuku or 7D lost tokyo or city of radiant ruin but it was actually this, since it's a polis)
Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 - Oberfay (Lakeside Town Oberfay)
https://youtu.be/Tt0gfOcnz7Q (etrian mystery dungeon's town themes are surprisingly good tbh. shame this one's never getting translated. glad i could reimplement this one now)

7TH DRAGON 2020 & 2020-II HATSUNE MIKU ARRANGE TRACKS - Tokyo Sequence
https://youtu.be/UWrJTnKJNTE (i had to have something resembling an actual 2020 series song in here somewhere, but vfd tokyo was a copout and i couldn't decide between the others (the ones mainly in contention were atlantica, the stultifying work "arrangement", virtually every possible version of jungle navigation obviously and also mankind's last stand. also the fm version of lost tokyo. gonna be honest, all of those i would strongly consider supporting in vgmc too, besides mankind's last stand obviously. i guess the diva arrange could conceivably be still legal? probably not idk))
Oneday of Adventurers - Kazan arrange (Boukenshatachi no Asa wa Hayai)
https://youtu.be/8yS7KQcXQXk (ziki_7 was just cracked on this album. no other way to describe it. insane to me that i couldn't find uploads. also yeah i know the title is just a blatant mistranslation but since the second album uses this title i felt i had to for consistency. oh yeah and i said i cut the last of these ziki_7 arrangements yesterday but ultimately i just couldn't)

now as for my remaining slot... well, that'll be a mystery until i actually finish checking separate things. going to make use of all the time i have here...

7th Dragon - Peaceful Lodging
https://youtu.be/29uAOoodrOs (yes i'm including an inn theme (i mean i did count the save theme for using lodging too if anyone saw the playlist already). but actually it's also a theme for at least one smaller town from what i remember. spoilers for immediately below here, these original 7th dragon songs grew on me immensely over the last few days)
7th Dragon - Songstress of the South Seas / Marlleaire Islands
https://youtu.be/wOPSAfCCnjM (i'm sure this song is what lead to etrian odyssey 3's soundtrack being what it was.)
7th Dragon - Songstress of the South Seas / Marlleaire Islands (Retro ver.)
https://youtu.be/Mbq3gZNeOnA (i kinda wish this town theme had more arrangements, like how the port theme in eo3 did. it's not a very ambitious bossa/lounge theme but it's serviceable. also these nes versions grew on me a ton too)
7th Dragon - The Lion's Resting Place / Aizhen Kingdom
https://youtu.be/b3ur3q-UxNc (the retro version of this does cool things but doesn't hold up like this one does, especially with how this intro sounds. said retro version also just fell off the list because its specific advantages were shared with another song i felt utilised them better, which shows up further down)
7th Dragon - Independent Militarism / The Nevanplace Empire
https://youtu.be/E7ppqdO0BM4
7th Dragon - The Alchemic Society / Pleroma
https://youtu.be/9J4XK4fXnl4 (indecisive about whether to count this place as pleroma (as seen on this game) or preloma (in vfd)... also just gonna add that while this and the retro version stayed on my shortlist longer than the later versions, the later versions (especially the 2020 ones) had a lot of stuff in them i liked more than in these ones, and i wasn't averse to the idea of picking event theme remixes, it's just that they also had parts that bothered me a lot on relistens)
7th Dragon - Journey - Lost Tokyo
https://youtu.be/LBuz40KRagI (in truth i was much more seriously considering the retro version here since it filled a specific niche of "songs that kind of sound like world of horror" though i honestly really like this one a lot regardless. one of the best examples of a great distressingly calm lategame dungeon theme in either series tbh, and it's such a wistful one too)
7th Dragon - Journey - Lost Tokyo (Retro ver.)
https://youtu.be/ztI6ZpgNM6w (incidentally yes this was the song i alluded to before in the aizhen writeup)
7th Dragon - Labyrinth 3 (Jungle Navigation)
https://youtu.be/Mha3IfP2Yts (maybe cheating to count this, but i am anyway since in 2020 it was reimplemented as "Shibuya - Jungle Navigation")
7th Dragon - Labyrinth 3 (Retro ver.) (Jungle Navigation)
https://youtu.be/XWCZlT5LXmI (this one feels so weirdly different to any of the other retro arrangements. not sure why it sticks out so much but it certainly helped keep it on my mind)
7TH DRAGON 2020 - Dungeon 2 (Shibuya - Jungle Navigation)
https://youtu.be/K3Kh3nFGBjk (it's remarkable how well every flavour of this song works on its own. even the indie rock miku version works to a dangerous extent)
7TH DRAGON 2020 - Dungeon 3 (Daiba - Frozen Town)
https://youtu.be/dz3PPEYEJUI (this was in my recent winter list and i'm surprised how much i still like it even relative to the other 7th dragon songs since i'd never given it any thought prior. not as good as shibuya or mls tho)
7TH DRAGON 2020 - Town 1 (Daybreak at the Metropolitan Government)
https://youtu.be/D8PTgFfaEjg (why is this so extremely PSO tho)
7TH DRAGON 2020 - Town 2 (Mankind's Last Stand)
https://youtu.be/LhxSJMqacvo (once i realised this was actually a hub area theme i was convinced i would absolutely be submitting this. that said, while it is really really good, i just didn't have space...)
7TH DRAGON III code:VFD - Tokyo: Cascading Ordeals
https://youtu.be/SXf1zuZrOc8 (i mean it would've been a total copout pick, especially after having had so many other songs grow immensely on me, but this is still my favourite 7th Dragon song)
7TH DRAGON III code:VFD - Atlantica: The Emerald Afterglow
https://youtu.be/OtuYt4V7ZNQ (this is probably top 5 though. regarding the vfd town-dungeons, tokyo>atlantica>cladeon>(moderate gap)kazan>>>(like a 2 out of 10 point gap)berg)
7TH DRAGON III code:VFD - Cladeon: An Undersea Shimmer
https://youtu.be/vfMic4C1_hE (the definition of this one as a "town" theme is a bit tenuous - this is more explicitly a dungeon but it did contain like a village of sorts. either way this is a very shatter-like theme tbh. was just slightly out of contention compared to the others here but i am definitely a fan)

7th Dragon Super Arrange - Peaceful Lodging ~ [Medley] ~ Options and Choices
https://youtu.be/VOiLvmfzpGU (i like the "game sense" the options part gives off as an arrangement of this nature goes. feels like something that would've fit in another game. either way yeah being only 50% a partial town theme nobody even remembers doesn't help)
7th Dragon Super Arrange - Songstress of the South Seas / Marlleaire Islands
https://youtu.be/MQGsCqR7SVI (well, there may not have been a bunch of fan arrangements but that's fine since it still had this one that just blew EO3 out of the water in a more literal sense than usual)
7th Dragon Super Arrange - Castle of the Hero-King / Kazan Republic
https://youtu.be/xq3LvVBgn4E (it wasn't quite up there enough for me to bring up the ingame version or its dq1-ass retro variant, but man i actually love this theme too though)
7th Dragon Super Arrange - Aizhen/Nevanplace Medley (The Lion's Resting Place / Aizen Kingdom ~ [Medley] ~ Independent Militarism / The Nevanplace Empire)
https://youtu.be/EgwjSQZnbIs (this album's medley game is too strong i swear)
Oneday of Adventurers - Nevanplace arrange (Yuki no Kouya wo Yuku)
https://youtu.be/Z4q62-kaHNg (on paper this one felt like it'd be the best one to pick among the three, but on further reviews it just retained a little too much of the passive side of the original song for what it was going for for my liking. (ok, i do like it but that's why it fell off my considerations ultimately. the mood it sets really is striking nonetheless.) i wish ziki_7 had covered any etrian songs i could've put in here on any of the albums he was on (and he was on a lot))
Oneday of Adventurers - Labyrinth 3 arrange (Komorebiyori)
https://youtu.be/Mj6tSg-BADI (it's not really a good jungle arrangement but it's such a beautiful song. that part with those strings!)
7TH DRAGON 2020-II Special Remix Sound Track - Town 3 [V3] (Stultifying Work)
https://youtu.be/uS0BqAkHg8Q (so this is just the unarranged town theme with the vocals from the diva (miku) arrange added. i was thinking of putting a persona theme on here, but this is a better persona theme than whatever i was actually going to pick lol. anyway the miku arrange for this proper from keeno is good too, it just has a hard time competing with this)

ok so yeah i've got a bunch of honourable mentions i want to get out of the way first

Etrian Odyssey - Etria (Night) (PC-8801) (Cityscape - Lounge with Talks of Tomorrow)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7SlbtyI7po
Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard - High Lagaard (Day) (Cityscape - Land Spread Up North)
https://youtu.be/iLYKVIp8oik (it's the inferior theme in this game, but still that grainy organ style part is so good though)
Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard - High Lagaard (Night) (PC-8801) (Cityscape - The Wind Shall Summon Heroes)
https://youtu.be/FI46rfgkKEY (ironic given the name, but this is really just a simple and good, down to earth theme. i love the chords)
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Armoroad (Day) (PC-8801) (Cityscape - Between the Azure Sky and Sea)
https://youtu.be/WIkj7CL6VJk (this is definitely one of the most town themes the series has ever had to offer. feels like this was dredged up out of a lost medium-budget 1995 vn and i am all for that as a deliberate style. i think the payoff to this one could've been stronger though, feels like koshiro either goes all in on that or just not, and i do think there may have been an attempt here but it fell flat)
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Deep City (Day) (Cityscape - The Deep Blue Ocean City)
https://youtu.be/sduckGGPjc8 (reviewing all the town themes and stuff in the original trilogy, i found that there was never really a version that was consistently better between the ds and source versions. sometimes the source would be way better, sometimes the ds one would just have that much more character to it. this was one of the cases where i definitely sided strongly with the ds version.)
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Inver Port (Cityscape - Sunlight on the Water)
https://youtu.be/qCyW5atLdHE (for when you really do be dancing at the cape of good hope)
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Senatus (Cityscape - One Hundred Years)
https://youtu.be/i_F3SbFrWw8
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - Celestial Palace (Cityscape - The King Lost in Time)
https://youtu.be/HXa0aCsGe6g (ngl i almost cried listening to this and senatus)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - Tharsis (Day) (Cityscape - The City Embraced by a Teal Sky)
https://youtu.be/ayVnWjs4KxI (the quintessential "old person easy listening car jazz" type of song i regrettably have a crippling weakness for)
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan - Tharsis (Night) (Cityscape - Lukewarm Peace in the Shade)
https://youtu.be/RFWLZCt97dQ (why were these ones so western influenced though)
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl - Guild House (FM Ver.) (Cityscape - Prep for Tomorrow)
https://youtu.be/6VaCFE5gcqI (the regular version was a bit underwhelming so i wasn't really prepared for this one low-key hitting like a truck tbh)
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight - Restaurant - FM Ver. (Cityscape - Peaceful Dining)
https://youtu.be/HdjwOOnT3OU (i know i probably should've been consistent and called this one guild house too but also the 3DS theme refers to it as this. anyway yet again koshiro going hyper authentic on the vibe on these themed fm arrangements. pia carrot wishes it could've sounded like this)
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight - High Lagaard (Day) (Cityscape - Land Spread Up North)
https://youtu.be/B_cUsykbxg0 (honestly i don't know how i feel about this arrangement factoring in, you know, EO4 and 5 stuff, but damn that trumpet added so much more to this version.)
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Guild (Cityscape - Names that will be Spoken of for Generations)
https://youtu.be/zJKAOJ9Q_0w (not exactly close to being the best eo5 "town" theme, but it's at least best explorers guild theme and it's also not close)
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Iorys (Day) (Cityscape - The Sun Rises for Ones Who Smile)
https://youtu.be/IqyHeMELZkE (the polish on this game's songs is insane though)
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Iorys (Night) (FM Ver.) (Cityscape - End of the Twin's Banquet)
https://youtu.be/asX_0pHk-Ko (i didn't really consider it after the regular one was taken and i was already kinda thinking i favoured day theme just slightly more currently, but also i can't just not mention how good this is)

Etrian Odyssey II Super Arrange Version - High Lagaard (Night) (Cityscape - The Wind Shall Summon Heroes)
https://youtu.be/rl0NgSbKHMk (i nearly didn't pick this because i mistakenly thought another version of this had already been nominated. so i did. buut then arrangements were out anyway so lol)
Etrian Odyssey IV Super Arrange Version - Labyrinth V - Forgotten Capital
https://youtu.be/8y8vThtoB_8 (this one too. i saw a few comedically out of place remarks that songs sounded "exactly like sonic" with the FM soundtracks in other games at times probably any genesis game besides sonic would've been more appropriate, but if they'd been saying it here i'd have to agree)
Etrian Odyssey Nexus - Magina (Night) (Cityscape - The Dusk-clad Ocean City)
https://youtu.be/uafSU9x5bJI (i cooled on this a little bit since bringing it up the other day. really feels like a stealth Super Arrange Version... arrange version, you know. i guess it is arranged by kamikura so fair really. it's unfortunate that while it doesn't ever pale in comparison to the others, it just doesn't stick out when you factor in the best of these ones)
Navigazione - EO3 Armoroad (Day) arrange (Pit INN Ah Man)
https://youtu.be/jc73WujW5F0 (it's a bit rough, but it's still got so much character to it that i really wanted to pick it. it's like mario kart)
Memories of The World Tree - EO3 Inver Port arrange (The Princess's Ocean-Colored Vacation)
https://youtu.be/SGxRtlhTK_c (there are a lot of fun inver port arrangements out there. i suppose it helps that it's up there as far as fun EO songs go. shoutouts to the super arrange and navigazione versions, both of which would be must-listens if not for this version existing)
Seedling - EO2U Restaurant arrange (I like you who eat a lot)
https://youtu.be/9astg5TNdEA (eo2u arrangements aren't exactly that common so i'm probably slightly biased on the basis that i'm just glad that this one existed at all)
Sekaiju no Omochabako - EO1 Etria (Night) arrange (Crossing Over This Night)
https://youtu.be/_8risntwT_A (besides being similar to the above one, i had about the same level of interest in this as it too. they go well together)
Forest of Crimson - EO1 Labyrinth V arrange (Brand New Ruins)
https://youtu.be/BKOrlw_USyQ (okay look i'm not saying i was "dangerously close to just picking a bunch of jazz pop arrangements of these songs" but i totally was. this one stayed on my considerations a bit longer than the prior two)
Oneday of Adventurers 2 - EO2 Opening ~ Etria (Day) arrange (Atarashii Bouken no Hajimari)
https://youtu.be/jZjeOCeBi0g (it's kind of a medley so it was out of my considerations pretty quickly but i enjoy it)
kompass - EO1 Labyrinth V arrange (Forbidden Garden)
https://youtu.be/fGHeQtTAiX8 (WHY IS THIS VERSION SO COOL THOUGH)

i guess they figured it being a console rts is kind of just its whole niche, which isn't totally unfair. it'd need to be optimised for pc a fair bit too and it's niche enough that they didn't want to spend time on that when it probably won't sell. hope it does though, i still want to see a proper sequel some day... in any case though i haven't really even seen the remake yet but i loved the original's story and world a lot (and yeah it's just a lot of real time strategy missions in a 2d sidescroller-esque plane, accompanied by a nicely detailed story) so I've been anticipating this release a lot, great to see it confirmed

Oh yeah, the gameplay may also be slightly hit or miss since the visuals (at least in the original) don't change much between missions so it may feel a bit repetitive. kinda just boils down to how much you enjoy the core gameplay, which i consider somewhat unique for its genre thanks to all the halls and stairs you have to navigate your summons through, and it can get fairly challenging

resurrectedreplayer (9.2) / Passing through the Forest (9.05) (great technical underdog winners damn no complaints here)
+1 Red / +1 Blue / DX (no numerical comparisons here because it's more a matter of which is the most suitable version here. comparing them fairly for what is really the first time now, dx is a really good arrangement with valid strengths while trying to preserve as much of the original(s) as it can, it's just unfortunately not a song that net gains from them. blue keeps my focus on the l/r beeps a lot more which are more fun than the (unusually midi sample-esque) percussion of dx (ftr i like that about dx tho). the beeps don't seem to be as blatantly stereo in the red version maybe thanks to the chunkier d&b though i appreciated that they alternate the beats at the start in that one along with the... whatever the things are in the flute section (hopefully not an emulation error), and it just has that added cool factor of being obviously a bit more technically ambitious for the system)
prime #4507 (9.35) / Suite Photoconductivity (9.65) (okay so i guess now's a time to actually be a bit critical about this to justify this. suite is both more and less than the sum of its parts, as despite its quality, it feels both like a concert and an album. it's a bit juxtaposed, you know, and half of me wants to evaluate it higher for its diversity when the other half is stumbling through it while trying to decide "do i like what this song (singular) does". prime is goes round and round in similar themes throughout and therefore has stronger flow despite ironically being remarkably more emblematic of those things in very literal senses. both have messages to portray, yes photoconductivity is more impactful in that regard but I don't think that lightens the intent of 4507 at all. oh yeah, and i wish the shorter tunes were more fleshed out in suite, i know it's deliberate for numerous reasons but following the like 8 minute epics that precede them it can sometimes feel like a waste. still, just to be clear, it still took what i consider a hell of a song to overturn my photoconductivity vote here)

btw also, I shared suite with a friend just a few days ago and they gifted me a copy of g-darius hd out of the blue in response. unfortunately my laptop apparently runs it shockingly poorly, but i was glad how moved they were by it that they felt the need to do that

Secret of the Forest (8.55)
Breath of Forest (7.35)

+1 The Spirit of the Mountain (8.1)
An Endless Desert (8.05)
+1 The Lost City (8.1)
(they're even closer than that tbh like i'd probably have them all in between 8.05 and 8.1 if i wasn't rounding them, this was hard)

anyway where is the prime vs suite bonus match >:(

oh, regarding wii u actually i just checked my wishlist and i forgot that yeah there were a lot of other indie games even here, though very few weren't on pc or other consoles... still, wii u experience was probably pretty different to other releases so there's that. i wouldn't be too surprised if stuff like ziggurat, soul axiom, axiom verge, the trine ports, tengami, child of light etc etc still hold up in at least a few ways despite all being on probably 10+ other platforms... (it's unfortunate they just weren't competitively priced compared to said platforms)

(actually i might as well just note all the other ones i had on there... the bridge, the swapper, the fall, nihilumbra, electronic super joy, badland, cloudberry kingdom, knytt underground, thomas was alone, never alone, chasing aurora, giana sisters, poncho, pirate pop plus, little inferno, nano assault neo, tachyon project, aperion cyberstorm, xtype plus, ghost blade hd, 140, and 6180 the moon... and dr luigi and the nes remixes, some physical games and and a lot of virtual console stuff)

i tried ASA for about an hour one time, it's strictly a couch co-op experience so if you don't have folks around willing to play it's not really worth it i feel. the presentation is hit or miss too

fast racing neo is a top tier indie racing game that has mostly been superceded by fast rmx on switch (there are notable difference but all the stages it has are in rmx including the dlc ones...)

the vc distinction on select games is pretty interesting though it's also kinda important to note that there's also a lack of multiplayer features on some of them...

also in any case i feel even less prepared to discuss what to get on wii u overall since i think nz missed an even larger chunk of the library (percentage-wise) than on 3ds...

oh i completely didn't realise moco moco friends had a physical release in the us lol, guess that explains its weird pricing...

i consider alphabounce good though i only just learned recently it was a port of a browser game so it's difficult to recommend it thaaaat strongly. crystal monsters also is just a little bit hit or miss, i think it's still one of the better pokemon clones out there though

oh yeah and i might as well add for chase cold case investigations that admittedly i haven't gotten around to it myself yet but it's kind of a spiritual successor to hotel dusk and last window i suppose? it's also sub $10 and eshop only so it's more than worth considering probably

thirdly to clarify for x-scape it's a sequel to the cool 3D gameboy game X that was a precursor to star fox. i personally like the original more than it since it was insanely advanced for its hardware and x-scape definitely isn't, but it's a good followup to it

lastly i neglected to add that the reason i brought up family kart 3d was because while it was a budget title, it also seemed like a mario kart 64 clone so that's cool

was playing pokemon masters ex for a while a few months ago up until my phone crashed some day and i reinstalled and realised i had lost all my data

anyway iris is pretty good and the 2nd cutest trainer in unova after rosa in that tbh. am a fan of how they handled blue, wallace and cynthia in that too, esp blue who is sort of an underdog compared to red and leaf but still badass in his own right
