Way too difficult to have any kind of nuanced discussion about China. Politicians sound like characters from a cartoon when talking about them. They've made some advancements while other aspects like how workers are treated in the country are legitimately horrific.

The problem is that these same neocons who are very loud about trying to get Americans to fear China, are also sneakily attempting to bring their policies here. With our luck, we'll end up only getting the humans rights violations and reductions in freedom with none of the "benefits."

Good post, this is the cycle in action. Republican efforts to compel the behavior they want by forcibly taking away choices will backfire on them, which then motivates them to push harder and remove even more choices. Eventually the endgame rightwing worldview is always that you require a class of human cattle who can be enslaved.

Remember this is the party who goes around yelling about freedom.

Republicans rigged the electoral maps to split Nashville three ways, so some idiot campaign manager glanced at it and probably had the impression that he would be well received there. But that doesn't actually mean the city itself likes Trump.

Musk loves China and has praised them for having one unified social app that apparently does everything. It wouldn't be out of character if he went around trying to buy as much as possible and merge it into one thing.

There's an interesting comment explaining that this arena was extremely loud and people weren't able to hear him which is when he started yelling. The media coverage took away that context which made it appear he's a crazy guy just yelling for no reason.

Seems like he was set up. Like how everybody thinks the McDonalds spilled coffee was some bogus lawsuit, but actually it was unnaturally scalding hot coffee that badly burned the woman and she was right to sue them.

You're right that it doesn't say this bill is actually implementing a requirement. What the bill is doing is mandating several studies to be performed about it.

If ID has to be implemented, it really needs to be at the device level and hope that Apple or Samsung or Windows are going to safeguard that shit. Trying to put the burden on individual sites will bankrupt 99% of the internet and cause the privacy nightmares that people are worried about.

I really don't get what this accomplishes.

You hear all the time these stories where a parent's credit card gets used to spend thousands on Fifa Ultimate Team and stuff like that (and obviously, the idea of stealing a relative's credit card goes back decades before modern gaming but that's just an example). In theory it sounds like it would be even easier to swipe a parent's ID because at least with credit cards you get instant alerts if you're paying attention. The problem and solution always comes back to whether the parents are paying attention or they don't care.

The only way for government alone to accomplish the level of safety they say they want to accomplish is to have cameras inside every room of every building in the country.
