I understand it when it comes to speedrunning, and I can understand preferring an authentic setup (not just real hardware but also eg CRT screen where relevant), but geez, most people just want to play the damn game and don't care if it's not technically 100% accurate on some obscure detail.

Right, because GameFAQs is the only place people are talking about it. Not like it's basically the only thing news is talking about despite there being so many far more significant issues going on, ykno, ones that actually affect people's lives rather than just a famous person dying. Yes, such an event deserves to be reported; no, it doesn't justify ignoring everything else and pumping out a new article every half hour about it. And it's not like literal fucking randoms consider it the first thing they need to bring up in conversation. Now I'm doing an in-person job again and while I could probably do it, still do a good job, and get away with it as long as I wasn't caught in the act of [this word was deleted at the request of a moderator or administrator], I'd rather not risk it. (My boss at the work-from-home job flat out would not have cared as long as I got the work done. The problem with that job was mainly that especially towards the end, "the work" was just being a buffer between him and clients that he'd pissed off or let down.)

After that long, it's very possible it's changed hands several times, quite possibly to someone at one point who wasn't aware it was stolen. Returning it to the rightful owner is still justified, but prosecuting someone who had no idea they were getting stolen goods is iffy... If you can prove they knew (or that they themself were the thief) sure, but that often won't be the case.

I'm no expert on VMs by a long shot, but back when I was a teenager I tried running a VM on my dad's Mac in order to use Steam and the games ran very slowly. That's where my impression that "VMs run things slower than native" comes from

VMs don't tend to be the greatest on the GPU side of things. And for that matter, neither do pre-M1 Macs.
